Larceny Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
From Bardstown, Kentucky

93WE

This small-batch Bourbon uses wheat in place of rye to create a soft, rounded character. The mild crème brulee aroma leads into sasparilla and creamy caramel flavors. At 92 proof, it's a wonder that the alcohol feels so moderate, but it makes its presence known in the cinnamon-firework finish. Attractive bottle design with clever keyhole label.

If you’re searching for the perfect whiskey to pair with ribs, look no further. Chili powder spices of paprika, cumin, black pepper, and dried chiles leap out of the glass, along with tea leaf, dark berries, dark chocolate, and candied orange peel. The palate, chewy and textured, stays consistent with savory and spicy notes of Spanish chorizo, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, red pepper flakes, blackberry, raspberry, and orange peel. It finishes short but satisfying, with more chili powder, black pepper, and smoked almonds.

Crazy-sweet aroma, full of caramel, vanilla and a slight floral touch. The bite comes first (and lingers awhile), followed by vanilla, caramel, coconut flavors. It mellows considerably with ice, and becomes quite likeable, drinkable and mild.

Knob Creek 7yr Rye Whiskey (750ml)
From Clermont, Kentucky

92WE 92BTI

Though this new offering meets the technical criteria for rye (a mash bill of at least 51% rye), the sweet, caramelly flavors suggest a high-rye Bourbon—which makes sense considering that Knob Creek is best known for its Bourbon. Expect bold almond, oak, brown butter and pecan pie flavors. The drying baking-spice finish is more characteristic of rye, and has less bite than might be expected of a 100-proof spirit.

92 points, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2013)

Rich amber color. Aromas and flavors of buttery cashew brittle, exotic fruit compote on angel food cake, yeasty rye dough, root beer, and delicate anise cookie with a lively dry-yet-fruity medium body and a corn pastry, creme brulee and peppery Asian spice finish. A fun flavorful rye with a zesty, fruit and spice character.

Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)
From Louisville, Kentucky

94WE Top 50 87WHA

Complex and dry, with a shifting array of aromas and flavors. At first, this rye smelled spicy and orange-y, but later opened up to a strong caramel fragrance. In addition to heavy wood in the flavor, caramel, dark tea, and tobacco also can be detected. Light, smooth finish is velvety on the tongue. Light to medium body, with the right amount of bite. With some dilution from ice, it opens up, and becomes even more light and crisp. Seems like a good rye for Sazeracs and other cocktails.

Wine Enthusiast Top 50 Spirits of 2010

One of the best kept secrets in rye whiskey. Not quite as refined as the Sazerac Rye 6 year old, but it makes up for it in its sheer brute force. It is darker, deeper, and more rustic (but in a good way). Chewy toffee and dark molasses balance the spicy rye notes and soothe the alcohol heat.

Bib & Tucker 6yr Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
From California

96TP

Named for the finery one would wear for special occasions back in the day, the six-year-aged bourbon has a nose of antiques, new saddle leather, chamomile-soaked butterscotch drops and warm cinnamon-kissed cedar. If that doesn't bring up images of Americana, the flavor profile mirrors the nose, urging on that sense of peace, harmony and balance: all the good things you taste and should feel while sipping a great 92-proof bourbon.

Rich amber color. Lovely aromas of frosted peach-raisin danish, cherry cola, and lively baking spices with a smooth, supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a snappy, oak spice, rye raisin bread pudding, cocoa and earth accented finish. Nicely balanced and flavorful.

91 points, Beverage Testing Institute (Feb 2012)

This amber whiskey is made with 95% rye, which puts it on the very high-rye side of the spectrum, and gives it a spicy zip. In some ways, this evokes an ultradry version of an orange liqueur, with juicy orange notes dusted with black pepper, clove, nutmeg and a faint hoppy note.

High West Whiskey Double Rye! (750ml)
From Park City, Utah

92BTI 90WHA

Light amber color. Exotic aromas of wintermint, sweet pickle, pistachio praline, anise, and pink peppercorns with a rich, chewy fruity-yet-dry full body and a gentle finish suggesting mint green tea and five spice. Fascinating.

92 points, Beverage Testing Institute (Feb 2011)

A blend of two straight whiskeys: a very young 2 year old high rye content whiskey and a 16 year old rye whiskey with a lower rye content. Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. A soft underbelly of caramel, sweet corn, and soothing vanilla provides an interesting counterpoint. Very easy-drinking, too (hard to believe it’s 46%). Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados — even if only to satisfy your curiosity.

First, a warning: this is only for those who like their rye big and brawny. It starts off innocuously with a maple-syrup color, and a pretty, complex and subtle scent: honey, vanilla, a sight medicinal tinge and faint clover notes. It feels silky on the tongue and at first, the flavors reflect caramel, burnt orange and a whisper of smoke, but then a mouth-warming wave of tannic bite sweeps over all and lingers for a good long time. Straight up or on the rocks.

Knob Creek 12yr Bourbon (750ml)
From Clermont, Kentucky

95WHA #2 Top 20

Until now, most Knob Creek has been bottled at 9 years of age or younger for good reason: There’s no guarantee that bourbon will taste good after a dozen years in the barrel—let alone great. This one is richly complex from the start: York Peppermint Pattie, raisins, baking spice, dark chocolate-covered cherries, iced tea, and tobacco barn appear on the nose, followed by a chewy, full palate laden with cinnamon, allspice, and ginger, and perfectly balanced with sweet berry cobbler, chocolate ganache, and caramel. The finish goes on and on. Add in a fair price and excellent availability as part of Knob Creek’s core lineup, and only one question remains: What are you waiting for?

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon (750ml)
From Clermont, Kentucky

94WHA 93BTI

This new single barrel expression of Knob Creek tastes very similar to the original “small batch” Knob Creek (when brought down to the same alcohol level). If anything, it’s slightly drier, more elegant, not as heavy on the palate, and more sophisticated — but I am reaching here. The similarity is a good thing, because I really enjoy the original expression. Keeping in mind that no two barrels are exactly alike, your decision to purchase the single barrel might just come down to whether you want to pay a little more for a higher strength version, and whether knowing that it might taste a little different than the standard small batch bottling excites you. This is a stylish, big, broad-shouldered bourbon with a thick, sweet foundation (nutty toffee, pot still rum, maple syrup) peppered with spice (cinnamon, but also vanilla and evergreen) and dried fruit. Dry, warming, resinous finish. (Incidentally, I would rate the small batch within a point or two, and the tasting notes would be very similar.)

94 points, Whisky Advocate (Vol. 19, #4)

Bright pale amber color. Aromas of buttery nut brittle, cherry cola, peppery spices, creme brulee and faint incense with a rich, vibrant fruity full body and a long, warming dried fruit chutney, anise, and spice finish. Rounds out well with a touch of water, but flavorful cocktails are the domain of this whisky and even a common bourbon and cola will be sublime.
