This Jos. A. Magnus & Co. release marries 18 year old and 11 year old bourbon with 9 year old light whiskey. Rich oak on a nose that offers butterscotch, vanilla ice cream, and sugared pecans, along with red fruit, baking spice, and black pepper. The palate reveals more vanilla, as well as almonds, honey, toffee, and gingerbread. Chocolate, baking spice, pepper, leathery oak, and tobacco leaf complete a long, sinewy finish that shows its maturity well.

More aromas unfold with time, revealing syrupy raspberries, apple cider, spiced honey, and orange peel. The palate is dark chocolate and cinnamon-forward with layers of spice and roasted coffee beans. The finish is luxurious with notes of dark chocolate and glazed fruit tarts.

This debut offering from Hudson Valley’s Coppersea, which employs “heritage method” distilling techniques, is surprisingly smooth and complex for an unaged whiskey. Distinct notes of banana and fiery cassia bark mesh with candied citrus peel. Recommended for cocktails in place of white rum or silver Tequila.

Coppersea uses New York grain (75% rye, 25% malt), mashed in wooden tanks and distilled in direct-fire copper pot stills. This unaged spirit is highly aromatic: hay, sunny meadow, hints of lavender and tansy, honeydew melon. Brilliantly herbal flavors, sweet grass, gobs of white pepper, lemon balm, and a long-lingering sweet heat. Almost more like an eau de vie than a whiskey, with layer upon layer to discover. Heretical thought: this might be wasted on a barrel.

The nose is freshly sweet, with notes of orange tea, orange peel, nectarine, licorice, dark chocolate, leather, and dried flowers. A creamy palate offers marmalade, fruitcake, baking spice, and barrel char. The finish is light but lengthy, with bursts of dark fruit tart, black currant, and vanilla bean. Excellent complexity for a whiskey this young.
