2020 Vasse Felix Premier Chardonnay (750ml)

Chardonnay from Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia

78% Gingin clone, the balance 95, 96 & 76. Fruit from Wilyabrup, Boodjidup and Karridale. Wild ferment in barrique (34% new), matured for 10 months. The 2020 vintage was made for the Vasse Felix chardonnay style. This is seamless, concentrated, floral, intense, so smart that it elicited a little chuckle upon tasting. Notes of peach and apple skin (of course) backed by jacaranda flowers, curry leaf, brine, crispy nori and pan fried nuts. What a wine. And what a bargain for this pedigree – so classy it's ridiculous.

I think sometimes this wine is overshadowed by the Heytesbury, which sits above it. However, it is an error to underestimate this wine. It may not have the funk nor the phenolic framework that the Heytesbury has, however it is possessed of a poise, polish and class that enables it to sit well in any glass. The 2020 vintage was warm, and the wines produced that year have been across the board excellent. In the 2020 Chardonnay, we see a combination of experienced hand and fortunate season in confluence, which brings us a wine that speaks of salted crushed nuts, pure apple, peach and even juniper, saltbush, a touch of kelp and layers of briney acidity. A brilliant wine.

Impressive for its vitality and intensity, offering lemon curd, salted butterscotch and dried pineapple flavors, with Fuji apple and fresh ginger accents. The flavors are amplified and harmonious on the long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2030. 4,500 cases made, 150 cases imported.

The middle sibling of Vasse's three Chardonnays, this is a restrained, poised and age worthy vintage. There's tangy orange and melon with flickers of salt, toast and florals. The palate is slightly more expressive with prickly acidity and a lovely texture. Harmonious and refreshing, with some buttered toast oak influence and a tangy fruit finish. Drink now—2030.
