Described as “one of the reference points for the appellation” by Jeb Dunnuck, the fresh and juicy 93 pt. 2020 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert boasts rich, dark fruit hinting of black olive and peppery spice with firm tannins on a lingering finish, an alluring and age worthy Northern Rhone Syrah from one of the region’s most iconic producers offered at an outstanding value price.

Founded in 1834 and among the most historic estates in the Northern Rhone, the modern renaissance of Paul Jaboulet-Aine began in 2006 when it was purchased by the Frey family, owners of Chateau La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owners of the Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, who appointed their daughter Caroline Frey to manage the estate. Implementing improvements over the next decade including the construction of a new gravity fed winery, winemaker and viticulturist Caroline Frey transitioned the estate to organic and biodynamic practices, employed stricter limits on yields and introduced a new barrel program from Bordeaux, resulting in “one of the great qualitative turnaround in the wine world” according to Robert Parker Jr. Considered one of the best terroirs in Crozes-Hermitage and among its oldest vineyards purchased by founder Paul Jaboulet, the biodynamically farmed 40-hectare Domaine de Thalabert parcel is planted with Syrah vines ranging from 60 to 80 years of age, the rocky, sandy terraces dotted with small pebbles that retain heat during the day and release it at night, promoting even ripening. After fermenting in stainless vats, Frey aged the impressive 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert in around 20% new French oak for 12 months, yielding “one classy Crozes” according to Jeb Dunnuck with “fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish,” ready to enjoy and promising to age gracefully over the next 15 years or longer.

Sharing the winemaking pedigree of the estate’s legendary Hermitage La Chapelle, the high-flying 93 pt. 2020 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert is an impeccably balanced, single vineyard Syrah offering Hermitage-like truffle aromas and luscious ripe dark fruit at a fraction of the price, delivering on its reputation as a benchmark for Crozes-Hermitages and a top value for lovers and collectors of northern Rhone Syrah.

The 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert is terrific as well. Coming from old vines in the Chassis region, it has a darker ruby/purple hue as well as classic Thalabert black and blue fruits, black olive, smoke, and ground pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it offers fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It will evolve for over two decades.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2022)
