Guigal is considered one of the Rhone's most important producers. Based in Ampuis (also home to Valrhona chocolates) they produce an extensive range of wines from up and down the Rhone Valley. Their Cotes du Rhone bottlings have been among the world's best wine bargains for the last 50+ years. It's all about selection, and no one does this better than Guigal. B-21's first Guigal for sale was the 1980 Cotes du Rhone Rouge. I got a chance to taste the 1980 earlier this year; remarkably fresh and lively, a testament to the work the Guigals do and the quality they seek throughout the Rhone. This dynamic family continues to produce remarkable wine values and at the same time, some of the finest wines on earth – their three single vineyards in Cote Rotie. Reference standard all.

Light, bright orange-pink. Vibrant red currant, raspberry and orange zest aromas show very good clarity and take on a spicy white pepper quality with air. In a lithe, precise style, offering tangy red berry and blood orange flavors and a subtle floral nuance. Finishes taut and dry, with clinging spiciness and a touch of succulent herbs. This a pretty grown-up wine for the category. All stainless steel.
