Perfectly balancing “richness and energy” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the opulent 95 pt. 2018 Tolaini Valdisanti is a luxurious 50-50 Super Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc offering fresh, aromatic dark fruit hinting of earthy spice with vibrant acidity and velvety mouth coating tannins, poised to age for nearly two decades at a superb value price.

Leaving his native Tuscany in 1956 with a one-way ticket to Canada, founder Pier Luigi Tolaini was a 20-year-old in search of fortune, initially working as a truck driver and eventually building one of North America’s largest transport companies over the next 40 years before returning to his homeland to make wine. After purchasing 25 hectares in Chianti Classico just north of Siena in 1998, Pier Luigi constructed a state-of-the-art winery and brought together the best technology and viticulturists, planting vineyards with a mix of international varietals as well as the indigenous Sangiovese and hiring famed enologist Michel Rolland to create wines reflecting the unique terroir of the Castelnuovo di Berardenga area. Now spanning 50 hectares of certified organic vineyards, the 2018 Valdisanti was sourced from the estate’s Tenuta San Giovanni Vineyard, the vines planted in the region’s sandy gravel soils mixed with limestone known as “tufa” and sustainably farmed by hand to maintain low yields and allow grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Crafted under the direction of famed consultant Luca D’Attoma, whose clients include Tua Rita and Allegrini’s Poggio al Tesoro in Bolgheri, winemaker Francesco Rosi aged the robust 2018 Tolaini Valdisanti for 16 months in French oak barriques with 6 months on the lees before bottling it unfiltered and aging it for 12 months more, yielding rich, layered fruit on a backbone of smooth, integrated tannins and balanced acidity guaranteeing a long-lived evolution that will provide decades of enjoyment.

From a top estate described as making "some of the best wines in Chianti Classico” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the rich and appealing 95 pt. 2018 Tolaini Valdisanti offers inviting, richly textured fruit with impressive complexity at a value price that makes it easy for fans of bold Super Tuscans to stock the cellar and reach for often.

A vibrant, lively red, this boasts cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors, accented by toasty oak. Deftly balanced and persistent, firming up nicely in the end, with terrific length and freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2042. 4,200 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Apr 2022)

Crazy nose of blackberries and red chilies follow through to a full-bodied palate with chewy yet polished tannins that expand in the mouth, giving it a velvety texture. Extremely long and flavorful. Turns compact. Give it time to open. Try in 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Oct 2021)
