When John Coltrane split with Miles Davis in the late '50s, he wasted little time releasing his visionary Giant Steps album. Winemaker Phil Sexton was inspired by the album and Coltrane's foresight thus naming his wine in Coltrane's honor. Sexton chose Yarra Valley because of his admiration for the long aging and fine boned wines produced by the new generation of wine growers reestablishing this historic wine region. Giant Steps focuses primarily on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley. Grapes are sourced from estate and leased vineyards as well as fruit from long-term grower contracts. Wombat Creek is the highest elevation vineyard in the Yarra, planted in the late 1980s in ferric volcanic soils and rock. The 2018s are in stride, showing the serious potential of Wombat Creek under Sexton's hand. In no way do the wines favor that pudgy marsupial.

Wow. This is complex and structured with dried strawberries and fresh flowers. Full body. Wonderful depth and intensity. The texture is so impressive. Give it time, but hard not to drink it. Screw cap.
