Andre Tchelistcheff first explored Hoffman Mountain; 2,200 feet in elevation, steeply sloped, high above the Central Coast fog line of Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach to the south) with its calcareous soils and beaming sunshine. He knew he had discovered prime vineyard land, described the place as "a jewel of ecological elements." That mountain would be home to Paso's first modern commercial vineyard and winery in 1964 when Tchelistcheff and Dr. Hoffman teamed up. When the Daou brothers set foot on that spot, their dream came true. Passionate, driven, obsessed by world-class Bordeaux varietals, Daniel and Georges Daou have found in this place – now christened Daou Mountain – the perfect location for cultivating captivating Cabernet, and it keeps getting better here with vine age, the Reserve bottling most expressive.

93V

Deep, shimmering ruby. Red and black currant, smoky oak and a hint of vanilla on the highly perfumed nose. Stains the palate with pliant cassis, bitter cherry, mocha and floral pastille flavors, while spice and mineral nuances lend back-end cut. Fleshy and deep but surprisingly lively as well, with well-knit tannins framing a finish that displays excellent focus and strong, fruity persistence. 50% new French oak.

93 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous (Dec 2020)
