Among the top wines of France, the world for that matter, the Roussillon has elbowed its way to the very top. Cuvees of Michel Chapoutier's Bila-Haut, Herve Bizuel's Clos des Fees, Severine Bourrier's Chateau de L'Ou and Thunevin-Calvet reign.

The tectonics that created the region as with the Pyrenees yields a mix of interesting soils. Various shades of slate abound with some ancient sea floor surfaced. Slate shows great drive in the grapes such as Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. Think of Priorat just south of this ancient wine growing region. Dry conditions are found here with good inventory of very old vines at varied elevations.

Partnership between our Bordeaux pal Jean-Luc Thunevin and Jean-Roger Calvet in this most remote wine growing region seems odd, but combine excellent holding of old vines by Calvet and the winemaking genius of Thunevin yields a most impressive range of wines.

A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan, the 2017 Les Dentelles offers up hints of mint tea, cracked pepper and ripe cherries on the nose. On the palate, it's crisp and fresh, marrying bright red and purple fruit with hints of fresh herbs on one end of the spectrum and dark chocolate on the other.
