Brilliant ruby. Vibrant cherry and cassis scents are complemented by suggestions of black pepper, licorice and lavender. Taut and structured on entry, then broader in the midpalate, offering dark berry and bitter cherry flavors that are sweetened by a subtle floral pastille nuance. Rounded tannins sneak up on the finish, which lingers with good, smoky persistence.

An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Syrah assembled from purchased wine, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Samorens is a strong effort. Black cherries are joined by hints of leather, earth and dried spices in a medium-bodied wine that's silky in texture and reasonably long on the finish. Drink it over the next few years.

A fresh, red-fruit nose with flowers and some lifted summer-berry aromas with a fresh, crunchy palate that has a drinkable feel. Drink now.
