Founded in 1731, the venerable house of Bouchard Pere & Fils manages 300 acres of vineyards of which 100 acres are classified as 1er Cru with 30 acres classified as Grand Cru. Among all these vineyard holdings there are as many as 70 wines produced. Bernard Bouchard purchased the Château de Beaune in 1820, a former royal fortress constructed in the 15th century by King Louis XI. Bouchard's expansive, deep cellars sit below. Unquestionably one of Burgundy's most historical producers, Bouchard delivered an incredible performance for both 2016 and 2017. In my recent tasting of these vintages, spanning their numerous holdings throughout the Côte and including both whites as well as reds, I was particularly pleased to discover a return to the very high quality I recall from superior vintages of the past.

From bottle, the 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru wafts from the glass with pretty aromas of cassis, cherries, black tea, rose petals and spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a textural attack, a fleshy, succulent core of fruit and a pure and expansive finish. Open-knit and charming, the wine's powdery, melting tannins are largely concealed. This is a generous, head-turning Clos de Bèze that delivers immense pleasure, albeit comparatively little in the way of profundity.
