It is safe to say that no one knows Bolgheri terroir better than Michele Satta. He established his winery there in 1983, the year before Bolgheri was a legally recognized wine growing region. Having consulted for a number of properties including Ornellaia, Michele selected the terroir for, and planted the famous Masseto vineyard. Masseto is Tenuta d'Ornellaia's top wine (100% Merlot) and is now among the top wines of the world at auction. Satta planted the Piastraia vineyards in 1991 to Merlot, Cabernet, Sangiovese and Syrah. Michele's vision was to affirm the affinity of Bordelaise varietals to this terroir and combine that with the elegance of Sangiovese and the complexity of Mediterranean-influenced Syrah. Piastraia is now among the top wines of Bolgheri joining the ranks of "Bolgheri Superiore" such as Argentiera, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso.

This shows real purity of fruit with currants and blackberries, complementing the orange-peel and stone character. Full body, firm and intense tannins with focus and purity that I really love. This needs four to five years to come together, but already a winner. Try after 2023.

The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia tastes open and ready from the get-go, with bright cherry and wild rose aromas followed by campfire ash and tilled earth. Piastraia is a historic blend by Michele Satta composed of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah. Keeping in the house style, the wine is remarkably smooth and elegant with a mid-weight approach that feels zesty and tonic to the palate. Some 38,000 bottles were made.
