Located in the Conca d’Oro (or “golden basin”) below Panzano, Podere Le Cinciole embodies the passion and dedication of owners Luca and Valeria Orsini. Since the purchase of the estate in 1991, the owners have replanted and moved farming practices to biodynamic and organic, cultivating almost exclusively Sangiovese on their land. With wines ranging from the inviting 2016 Chianti Classico and rich 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva, to the bold IGT Cabernet blend 2016 Camalione and finally the spectacular 2016 Petresco IGT made from 100% Sangiovese, Luca and Valeria are hands on from vineyard management to the winemaking. With unwavering commitment to quality and sustainability, their reputation among peers is as humble stewards of their land. Humble might be an understatement – perhaps there is a Lamborghini in the garage, but it’s likely a well-worn tractor.

Long recognized as one of the top crus in Chianti, the soils are typical galestro, pieces of slate mixed into clay and sand with vineyards facing southeast at altitudes reaching 470 meters. While it’s often said the name Conca d’Oro derives from the fact that this is prime locale for growing Sangiovese, the name actually comes from its history of producing grain for one of Tuscany’s staples, bread, till the mid-19th century. But while perhaps the “golden basin” originally referred to glimmering fields of ripened wheat, it’s certain that the wines of Le Cinciole will have you agreeing with internationally recognized critic Antonio Galloni – there is indeed “gold in them thar hills.”

92V

Le Cinciole's 2016 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. Fresh, floral and light on its feet, the 2016 offers striking Sangiovese character in its flavor profile and overall structure. Sweet red cherry, mint, pine and freshly cut flowers add to the wine's lithe, refined personality. The 2016 is all class, all the way, not to mention a huge overachiever in its peer group.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2019)
