Portuguese wine enthusiasts, especially B-21 fans of the top dry red table wines of the region, are no doubt quite familiar with (and fond of) João Portugal Ramos. João - JP to those who know him best - has made quite a name for himself and the wines of his native Portugal. As a pioneering wine consultant widely considered Portugal's Pierro Antinori or Emile Peynaud (The New York Times), JP has singlehandedly brought Portuguese winemaking into the modern era, converting once backwater properties into world class operations. From 1997 through 2004, JP embarked upon his solo venture, completing an estate which encompasses 1,250 acres of vineyards, located near the ancient marble-filled town of Estremoz in Alentejo. Here, JP produces wines across multiple varietals, ever attentive to terroir, climate and regional typicity. His are the standard bearers of the region, in all price points, with stacks of critical acclaim his testaments. JP's Ramos Reserva, hand-crafted from a selection of grapes native to Alentejo, Trincadeira and Aragonez, plus a touch of Syrah, is deliciously ripe with that classic hint of spice and fresh herb that's so alluring in JP's wines. From a vineyard planted in 1989, this one's gonna shock ya for the price.

This blend of Trincadeira, Aragonez and Castelão is spicy and fruity. Rich tannins as well as ripe black fruits give this firmly structured wine the potential for further aging. Bold and full bodied, it should be drunk from late 2019.

90 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2018)
