No secret that Guigal is considered one of the Rhone's most important producers. Based in Ampuis (also home to Valrhona chocolate) they produce an extensive range of wines from up and down the Rhone Valley, some of the finest wines on earth. Their Cotes du Rhone bottlings have been among the world's best wine bargains for the last 50+ years. It's all about selection, and no one has done this better than the three generations of Guigals I have worked with. Its been nearly 40 years since we first imported Guigal wines, sharing the shipping container with Bern's Steak House – as the wines were not otherwise available in Florida in those days. Last year I had the change to taste a wine from that shipment, at Bern's. The 1980 Cotes du Rhone Rouge was remarkably fresh and lively, a testament to the work the Guigals do and the quality they seek throughout the Rhone.

The finest effort I’ve tasted from this estate’s Gigondas, their 2016 is a drop-dead gorgeous wine that competes with the best in the appellation. Loads of framboise, lavender, garrigue, and hints of game emerge from this sweetly fruited, full-bodied, powerful yet elegant Gigondas. It’s beautiful wine and I continue to believe that 2016 is one of the greatest vintages ever (if not the greatest) for the Southern Rhône. You can drink this beauty any time over the coming 15-20 years.
