The journey to Certified Organic began in 1965 when Paolo Cianferoni's family purchased the estate in the heart of Tuscany, Radda in Chianti. Paolo's work began in 1982 when the estate became his home. This wine is named after the 16th century home/cellar called Caparsino. With production less than 2,000 cases, in part because of severe selection, complete care and total control are possible to produce not only an organic wine but a superstar Chianti Riserva and fair to say, the highest rated Riserva under $50. Paolo controls every aspect in the vineyard and cellar. The 46 year old vines are deep into the gallestro and alberese soils and can certainly take care of themselves. The Cellar is minimal intervention. New oak is avoided. Purity is the goal. How can so much come from doing so little? Wine is made in the vineyard, not the cellar, Paolo would say. Made with organic fruit, the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo flaunts its maverick appeal thanks to the informally scripted label affixed to the front of the bottle. This is a fun and offbeat wine with tart cherry, plum, spice and crushed stone. This Riserva is a silky, mid-weight wine that feels glossy and polished to the palate, with lasting and elegant intensity.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is powerful and deep, with tons of intensity and structure. High-toned aromatics add character along with an element of rusticity that nevertheless works quite well here. Macerated cherry, plum, leather, cloves, menthol and coffee all develop with time. A dollop of Colorino contributes further shades of nuance and complexity. The Doccio a Matteo is a compelling wine done in a decidedly old-school leaning style.
