In the 1980s, I paid my first visit to this historic, iconic winery after tasting various vintages of their "Home Ranch" and "Keyhole Ranch" bottlings at a massive Zinfandel fair. Seghesio impressed me with their ability to offer the consumer palpable bang for the buck while maintaining classy varietal characters. I learned of the family's long-standing history in the Sonoma region, one that was born long before Prohibition, committed to Zinfandel from day one. In the vineyard which the family continued to refer to as their "Home Vineyard" (named after the first home built on the property by those forefathers ca. 1895), Edoardo Seghesio and his bride Angela Vasconi began a history of single vineyard plantings that lives on to this day. Tasting through their single vineyard offers a few years ago, Parker gave kudos to the modern versions, stating, "For the price/quality ratio, these are some of the finest Zinfandels being produced in California." The Old Vines bottling no exception. It harkens back to those days of Edoardo and Angela and illustrates how deftly articulate old vines can be. The 2015 offers that singular varietal expression; classically Seghesio.

Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Zinfandel Old Vine offers a beguiling nose of crushed blueberries, Black Forest cake and crème de cassis with hints of dried roses, licorice, incense and tilled soil. Full-bodied, rich and with wonderful purity, it has an amazing frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 8,000 cases produced.

Plums, blackberries, cedary spice, and peppery herb notes all emerge from the 2015 Zinfandel Old Vine, a straight-up classic expression of this variety. More tobacco and cigar notes develop with time in the glass. It's medium to full-bodied, has plenty of tannins, and is beautifully balanced. It will keep for a decade.

Thoroughly old-school, offering briary cherry aromas and evocative raspberry, cracked pepper and dusty sage flavors that finish with zesty tannins. Drink now through 2026. 8,690 cases made.
