Tasting at the Lafite Rothschild estates during en primeur week, I was afforded the opportunity to explore one of my favorite dry white wines of the region. Produced at the Rothschild's Premier Cru Classé estate of Rieussec in Sauternes – but from NON botrytized grapes, hence a DRY wine – is the amazingly complex, "absolutely deliciously" (says Galloni of this 2015) "R" de Rieussec. I tasted five vintages while visiting the estate, and folks, the 2015 has NO competition. A blend which changes with the year, the 2015 is comprised of 62% Semillon and 38% Sauvignon Blanc, perfectly balanced for the 2015 vintage. Against the other examples in the line-up, the aromatics in the 2015 waft from the glass; notes of citrus and stone fruits lifted by a perfumed floral aspect that is pure and thoroughly unique to this gorgeous wine. There's a lovely integration of the wood in this vintage as well, with the barrel aging regimen giving volume without heaviness. I sat with this wine for several minutes, loving every new change in its ever-unfolding personality. This is THE perfect dry white Bordeaux, one you'll love with every late spring and summer occasion.
