The 2015 Erdener Herzlei Riesling Spätlese Gold Capsule is the same material as the dry Spätlese, but was stopped at 7% alcohol and 98 grams of residual sugar. Coming from a vineyard straight next to the Prälat and based on 120-year-old vines, this Spätlese opens with a very clear, intense and flinty/stony bouquet with lemon flavors and an almost volcanic character. Mouth-filling, lush and piquant, this is very clear, fresh, elegant and complex; it is more crystalline and thus a leaner style of Spätlese than the Prälat. Already stimulating and seductive, this is another gorgeous 2015 Riesling from Christian Hermann.

In 2014, Germany changed its wine laws to allow some number of named parcels on the label, such as Herzlei, a half-hectare of land in the Erdener Treppchen. This gold-capsule bottling feels extravagant in its vibrant orange fruit, notes of mango, tangerine and bittersweet marmalade bursting with juiciness. It’s spicy, too, lasting with firmness and savor.
