Much like Francesco Redi, 17th century Italian poet who called Vino Nobile "the king of all wines," I have a great fondness for the Prugnolo gentile-based wines from this DOCG classified zone 50 miles southeast of Florence. Family patriarch Alibrando Dei spent the first decade establishing the vineyards, adding additional parcels, and restoring the property's 1930s villa. In 1985, Alibrando and the family began estate bottling their wines and by 1991 his granddaughter, Caterina joined the family business. Her passion for the great wines of Vino Nobile and the decision to enlist the services of Italy's most important oenologist, Paolo Caciorgna (Altesino, Nicodemi) has resulted in wines which, in the words of Galloni, "scream with personality and character." You will adore Dei's Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, reference point for zone and style; elegant and pure, compelling and generous.

This red is broad, yet vivid and focused, featuring violet, black currant, blueberry, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. A swath of dense tannins lends support as this plays out on the long aftertaste. Distinctive and complex. Drink now through 2036. 1,100 cases made, 400 cases imported.

Lots of ripe fruit, showing the ripeness yet balance of the vintage. It’s full-bodied with round, rich fruit and a flavorful finish. Chocolate and dried fruit with figs. Extremely long and delicious. Drink or hold.

This has a rather shy nose but eventually reveals black plum, underbrush, pressed violet and exotic spice aromas. The full-bodied, enveloping palate offers dried Marasca cherry, brandied prune and star anise flavors framed by fine-grained tannins. Drink 2020–2025.
