Lovers of the more savory and refined style of Amarone take note; the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Punta 470 is an understated beauty. It takes some time to open up in the glass, slowly revealing spiced orange, crushed black cherries, dusty clove, lavender and violets. There are layers of dark textural fruits here, perfectly framed by saline minerals, exotic spices and juicy acidity. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to call this out as an Amarone, as the energy remains remarkably high despite the warmth of 2015 vintage. Notes of fresh cherry pits, cranberry, licorice and inner rosy florals linger throughout the lightly structured finale. The longer the Punta 470 spends in the glass, the deeper it becomes, leading me to believe that a good decanting will bring out even further complexity. This is very well done.
