“Elegant and expressive wines…built for the long run”

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

B-21 fans of traditionally styled Riojas have the superbly talented master of terroir Pedro Pecina firmly in their corner, crafting his silky, complex Riojas from some of the region’s best vineyards with extended aging, these elegantly complex Senorio Pecina selections representing a range of pleasing and delicious Riojas well-aged to enjoy now and perfect for mixing a case.

Coming from a long line of grape growers, Pedro Pecina honed his expertise in viticulture as vineyard manager for La Rioja Alta over two decades, establishing Bodega Hermanos Pecina in 1992 with 20 hectares of his family’s old vine parcels around San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Expanding his holdings to 50 hectares, Pedros’ sustainably farmed vineyards are located near the border of the Basque Alavesa zone on the northeast side of the Ebro river, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. Situated at around 500 meters of altitude, the vineyards are planted mostly to Tempranillo vines from 40 to 60 years of age with small amounts of Graciano and Garnacha in a diverse mix of calcareous clay soils on north facing slopes that enjoy cooler summer temperatures. Employing traditional artisan techniques in his barrel-filled cellars including spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and racking every six months from barrel to barrel by gravity (unlike many larger bodegas who pump to stainless steel tanks), Pedro’s Riojas undergo long aging in mostly neutral American oak and then further aging in bottle well beyond the specifications required by the DO, yielding rich complexity even in the youngest wines with fresh, textured fruit and velvety integrated tannins. Described by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez as “impressively balanced, nuanced and complex,” the fresh and juicy 92 pt. 2015 Senorio Pecina Crianza offers bright spiced red fruit and energetic acidity, while the “creamy” 91 pt. 2014 Senorio Pecina Reserva boasts fragrant, darker fruit with zesty minerality, both ready to enjoy. A single vineyard bottling from his 8 hectare Finca Iscorta old vine parcel, the rich and powerful 94 pt. 2010 Senorio Pecina Finca Iscorta Gran Reserva is aged for over 7 years before release, revealing aromatic ripe spiced fruit, supple tannins and “a juicy finish that draws you back” according to the Wine Spectator’s Thomas Matthews.

Summed up by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez as “traditionally styled and sensibly priced,” these classic Senorio Pecina Riojas are meticulously crafted expressions of Tempranillo grown in exceptional terroir, drinking beautifully now and bargain priced for Rioja fans to enjoy often and for anyone seeking elegant, drinkable Spanish wines that won’t break the bank.

The creamy 2014 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva has abundant balsamic notes, hints of incense and cigar ash and plenty of spices and a smoky touch combined with candied fruit and a sharp mouthfeel, like the élevage of three years in used American oak barrels was a bit rough with the more delicate fruit from 2014. 42,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. It's ready now, and it's not a Reserva for the very long haul.

91 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 251 - Oct 2020)
