You've heard it before, and in this case it definitely bears repeating; when it comes to making great wines and earning a fantastic reputation, it comes down to three things: location, location, location. Rocca di Montegrossi is that prime example. Tasting Proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi's range – from his basic Chianti to the stunning specialty cuvees – drives this home. I've been a fan for years, having first discovered Marco's voluptuous Tuscan beauties thanks to a chance encounter via Vinexpo many years back. Echoing my sentiments, Galloni may be Marco's biggest fan, telling the world, "...boasting a superb track record, Rocca di Montegrossi remains one of the most under the radar estates in Chianti Classico, and Italy, for that matter... Marco crafts deep, powerful wines that capture the essence of Monti, a sub-zone of Gaiole that has long been prized for the personality and pedigree of its reds. The estate's Chianti Classico is often one of the best wines in its class..." For 2013, Marco's Chianti tops just about anything I've tasted – it'll take on the finest Gran Selezione and hold its own. Add to that my irresistible price, you've got your Chianti case buy of the year.
The 2013 Chianti Classico is dark, sensual and beautifully layered in the glass. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, mint and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in a textured, inviting Chianti Classico endowed with notable depth and personality. In 2013, Rocca di Montegrossi's Chianti Classico is especially dark and powerful.

A wine with plenty of dried cherry and citrus fruit aromas and flavors. Medium body, slightly chewy tannins and a fresh finish. How Chianti Classico should be. Drink or hold.

The stony soils of this Gaiole estate yielded a firm Chianti Classico in 2013, with flavors of black cherry and plum accented by tobacco and dried herbs. Fine, ferrous tannins give a mineral impression, while bright acidity gives the wine a juicy and open character. Pair its dark fruit flavors and herbal notes with kale and black trumpet mushroom rigatoni.
