Given the difficulty with Grenache in 2013, the Grenache-dominated 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Imperiale (Vigne Centenaires) is a head-turner that offers terrific notes of plum, black cherries, mulberries, dried flowers and licorice. Brought up all in concrete tank, this medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, yet structured Grenache will be better in a year or three, and drink well through 2025.

Brilliant ruby. Fresh blackberry, cherry cola and potpourri aromas are energized by a peppery nuance. Sweet, broad and seamless in texture, offering juicy, nicely concentrated red and dark berry flavors and a hint of candied lavender. Shows excellent depth, breadth and power on the gently tannic finish, and a hint of licorice pastille comes on late.
