The bands of slate (schist) that make up some of the greatest wine region's geology certainly include the Douro of Portugal. Well known are the slates of the German slopes, the mountains of Priorat, brown and red slates of southern France's Roussillon, and other less known areas such as Faugeres and Maury. The nose of wines from old vines rooted in these areas gives you a vivid glimpse into the aromatics of slate. Regardless of the grape, slate gives particular intriguing aromatics, precision and textural length and intensity on the palate that is unique in the wine world. Take a great vintage like 2013 in the Douro, 35-year-old vines, great vineyard sites; yields an enormous wine that requires aeration as it is very young and recently bottled. This is an early glimpse at 2013, of what is to come. This needs air.

Deep purple. Intense aromas of berry fruit well balanced with fresh notes of cocoa and delicate hints of violets. Elegant beginning leading to a well structured wine, with great volume and smooth, finely textured tannins. Everything is in perfect harmony with vibrant berry fruit flavours. Fresh and lingering finish.
