Monte del Fra translates to "Hill of the Monks," overlooking Lake Garda just north of Verona. Records of Monte del Fra date back to 1492 when the the winery was owned by the monks of the Santa Maria della Scala order of Verona. More recently in 1958, the Bonomo family established today's winery, Using the traditional method of air drying grapes, becoming raisin-like before fermentation begins (think of the intensity of dun-dried tomatoes), creating wines of concentration and power. Aromatics of black fruits, figs, cherry and plum, raspberry with black pepper, vanillin, cocoa, with floral aspects too. The palate feel is lush with velvet-like textures. Both the Ripasso and Amarone are produced from 80% Corvina Veronese and Corvinone, and 20% Rondinella grapes. Both are excellent values.
A layered and rich red with plenty of dried orange peel and plum character. So tight and focused. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Drink now or hold.
95 points, James Suckling (Oct 2017)
