The 2012 Rapsani Reserve is the the typical formula and field blend, roughly equal proportions of Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto, aged for 12 months in a 70/30 blend of used and new French oak. It comes in at 13.4% alcohol and is sourced from a higher altitude zone than the regular Rapsani. This is so young, fresh and flavorful that it has almost a Beaujolais-esque intensity of flavor. It is wonderfully delicious. Once past the sexy fruit flavor, there isn't much real concentration, but this has good structure, a backbone and a graceful feel. It is a lot of wine for the money. If it pulls in some of that oak, it might even improve in the cellar. It drinks pretty well now, though. This runs around 12 Euros in Greece.

Made in a more modern style than the Grande Reserve (above), this shows its heavy extraction in its plummy fruit and chocolate richness, a generous dollop of vanillin from new oak barrels sweetening the mix. The tannins come up on the back end, a little surprising, needing protein to calm.
