The wine region Campania is located just south of Rome along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, including the Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, city of Sorrento and inland towns that share their name with a wine region such as Tufo, Avellino and Taurasi. Aglianico is the legend red grape here and in southern Italy generally, planted by the Greeks 2,500 years ago. Aglianico is to Campania what Nebbiolo is to Piedmont or Sangiovese is to Tuscany. Many would agree the best Aglianico is produced in Taurasi. Aromatics are floral/rose, tobacco, herb and spice. On the pallet, rich dark fruits of berry and black-cherry with a mineral drive and good tension throughout. Possibly the most notable Aglianico attribute is the density of tannins, giving these wines the ability to age, in some cases for decades. Aglianico is among the greatest red wines of Italy – look to Molettieri to provide a textbook example.

A deep, plush, full-bodied red, with dense tannins that are well-meshed to flavors of black cherry pâte de fruit, olive paste, cured tobacco, spice box, iron and graphite. Big and brooding, this nonetheless maintains a sense of elegance throughout. Best from 2022 through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,000 cases made, 100 cases imported.

A very meaty, spicy Taurasi with cedary and tarry accents, highlighting more fruit-driven elements of blackberries and dark cherries. It’s really deep and dense, but remarkably polished and agile for a wine of 15% alcohol and nearly 7 years of age. There’s tension and beauty here, not simply raw power and opulence. Drink now.

94 points, James Suckling (Nov 2019)

Moderately saturated red-ruby. Musky aromas of red currant, aromatic herbs, spices and flint. Smooth and fine-grained, conveying a distinctly refined quality to the big, juicy red cherry and sweet spice flavors. Showcases outstanding balance and length, finishing with solid extract and excellent length.
