There's a legend in Chile of a young woman on her errands when a bolt of lightning drew her attention skyward, forcing her to gaze upon the face of the most handsome god, unable to look away, falling madly in love. The god took pity on the mortal, swept her up, whisking her to the top of Aconcagua Mountain allowing her to share the views of the gods. Unable to remain by her side, the god gifted the young woman with Ruca Malen – her personal home – on the highest peak of the mountain, plus an unending supply of heavenly nectar which allowed her to witness the views of the gods any time she pleased. Jean Pierre Thibaud and Jacques Louis de Montalembert (former members of Domaine Chandon of Argentina) launch their solo venture in the late 1990s; high quality vineyard land was abundant. Lujan de Cuyo offered the perfect ingredients for producing their world-class wines. Combining their European heritage and experience at Chandon, the duo hired Pablo Cúneo, one of Argentina's most renowned oenologists. Christening their project Ruca Malen, they offer us one of the greatest portfolios found anywhere in South America.

The aromas of licorice, tar and dark fruit are very impressive. Full body, silky and refined tannins and a pretty finish. Shows tension and form. Drink in 2019 but beautiful now. Best wine from here!

95 points, James Suckling (May 2016)
