Deep, dense and pure from the opening bell, this Toro is a winner. Aromas of dark ripe black fruits are cool and moderately oaked. This feels massive on the palate but sensationally balanced. Flavors of blackberry, coffee, mocha and toasty oak finish spicy, smooth and heady. Drink this exemplary Toro through 2023.

Dark purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet displays scents of ripe dark berries, incense and vanilla, with an intense floral nuance adding lift. Stains the palate with potent black and blue fruit liqueur and violet pastille flavors, with zesty acidity providing spine and lift. Smooth tannins build slowly and steadily through a strikingly long, focused finish, with the dark fruit and floral notes repeating. I was surprised by this suave wine's forward character but suspect that it will be even better with another five-plus years of bottle age.

This rich, generous red delivers plum pudding, dark chocolate and baking spice flavors, with loamy earth and licorice notes. The tannins are muscular but well-integrated, balanced by balsamic acidity. Drink now through 2028. 6,500 cases made.
