It's been nearly four decades since my first visit to Marques de Riscal, a slightly longer period than the reign of Spain's communist leader Francisco Franco, which ended in 1975. Early on Franco cut off exports, in this case, halting sales of Riscal. I thank Franco for preserving those vintages in the cellar – that bottle of 1928 Riscal that was most graciously shared with me on that visit. 1928 was after all the year when Rioja became a legally designated wine region. Emblematic of the post-Franco Spanish wine revival is Frank Gehry's Marques de Riscal Hotel, pictured in the header of Mucho Gusto. A dramatic, daring statement of a new revolution. Much has been endured. Riscal continues to capture the essence of Rioja, elevating the region's reputation and creating a wine destination for us all.
