Pierre Oliver Clouet is head winemaker at both Cheval Blanc as well as Cheval des Andes, and when I tasted with him during en primeur week in April at the chateau in St.-Emilion, we had a chance to discuss the phenomenal work he is performing in Argentina. Besides bottling one of the very finest wines of the 2016 vintage anywhere in Bordeaux – the 2016 Cheval Blanc is a true collector's item – Pierre Oliver Clouet and his team have worked tirelessly in their pursuit of the perfect wine in their New World winery as well. For the 2012 bottling – a slightly warmer vintage – Pierre reports that he and his team harvested their Malbec and Cabernet earlier; this retained incredible freshness, while the increase in Cabernet for the 2012 brought a dynamite floral component that Pierre compares to some of his favorite vintages of Cheval Blanc. Pierre also explained that there are no rules – no recipes – for Cheval des Andes. Wood regimes, barrel sizes, aging times, fermentation periods, percentages of each varietal... everything depends on Mother Nature and the vineyard. Truly the Grand Cru of Argentina, you owe it to yourself to have this wine in your collection and on your table.

Fabulous aromas of blackberry, spice and flower. Perfumed. Lavender, rose and lilac too. A wine that grows on the palate with extreme finesse and complexity that shows ultra-fine tannins, currants, and flowers. Super length. Mostly mablec with cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Best Cheval des Andes ever? Drink or hold.
