Gauby’s 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Muntada, which comes from ancient, pre-phylloxera Grenache (45%), Carignan (35% and vines over 120 years in age) and Syrah (20%) vines, offers a deep, complex and almost distilled essence of wild herbs, blackcurrants, tar, licorice, sage brush and leather on the nose. There’s no makeup here, and what you get is the raw essence of the Roussillon. Spending 30 months in a combination of large and small barrels, it is full-bodied and rich, yet very focused and tight, with a firm, structured core. It will need 2-3 years of bottle age to round into form, yet will have upwards of 20 years, if not more, of total longevity.
