2010 Vina Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz Gran Reserva Cosecha Propria de Vinas Viejas (750ml)

Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon, Spain

Brilliant ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of red and dark berry preserves, cherry cola, mocha and incense, along with cola and smoky oak nuances that expand in the glass. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated, spice-tinged blackberry, cherry-vanilla and lavender pastille flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Delivers a suave blend of richness and delicacy and finishes impressively long and appealingly sweet, with velvety tannins building slowly.

Pago de Santa Cruz is planted entirely to tempranillo, some of the vines 100 years old. In the temperate 2010 vintage, it offered a balanced wine: Nothing feels excessive here, and if the oak shows at first, it slowly recedes as the tannins take the lead, revealing notes of Indian spices, red cherry, ripe strawberry and earth, together with a mineral note that will evolve as the wine ages.
