With an average age of 45 years, these old Baga vines have produced a a dark, brooding and concentrated wine. It is dense, solid with black plum skins and deep tannins. It is also expressive of the limestone soils of the region, steely and mineral. Give this several more years. Drink from 2018.

The 2010 VINHAS VELHAS red is a big uptick in depth and power over its elegant sibling, the Vinha Barrosa. Intense, crisp and quite stunning this year, it is gripping on the finish, silky and impressive. Its structure and acidity should give it a long life ahead, but it has the depth to support those structural items as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if this closes down hard for a couple of years in the near future. Beware. Drink 2014-2030.
