Utterly profound in every way, the 2010 Hermitage les Bessards comes from the steepest, most rugged and "badass" part of Hermitage Hill, the broken granite soils of the les Bessards lieu-dit. Inky colored, thick and massively concentrated, it has sensational notes of liquid granite (the essence of granite!), smoked meats, scorched earth, currants and chocolate on the nose. Full-bodied, frighteningly concentrated, structured and backwards, it needs another decade of cellaring but will keep for half a century.

Take the Domaine des Tourettes, add additional mid-palate depth, more texture, and another notch on the intensity spectrum, and you have the 2010 Les Bessards. The incredible, almost liquid minerality of the Domaine des Tourettes is more than present here, yet there is also noticeably more going on aromatically, with notions of lavender, smoked herbs, bacon, pepper, and layers of black and blue fruits all soaring from the glass. Full-bodied and massively constructed on the palate, with massive levels of extract, tannin, and acidity, it is perfectly balanced, has awesome purity of fruit, and insane levels of sweet, ripe tannin lending length and focus on the finish. More fun to taste than to drink (and I followed the bottle for three days), it needs to be hidden in the cellar for upwards of a decade. It will have three decades or more of prime drinking.
