At the northern end of the commune of Saint-Julien, opposite the vines of Chateau Latour across the boundary in Pauillac, an old stone wall encloses a 50-hectare piece of vineyard. This is the grand clos, the heart and nucleus of one of the best, and certainly one of the longest-living, of all the Saint-Julien properties - if not of the entire Medoc. Since the late 1950’s Chateau Leoville-las-Cases has consistently produced one of the best clarets in Bordeaux - perhaps of all wines the nearest in quality to the first growths.
