Single Vineyard Zinfandels
Napa Valley's Hidden Gems
"Head
pruning of vines was popular before
trellising and many still feel it is
the best way to go for Zinfandel
since it optimizes sun exposure to
the entire vine. Really old vines
are recognizable by their thick
trunks but also because they are
often pruned in this style that was
widespread in the late 19th and
early 20th century. 'Head Pruned'
will be focused on bringing you the
most unique and interesting wines
being offered from old vines. Many
of these will be small production
items as the number of really old
vineyards is relatively small.
Zinfandel is California's own
grape. Sure it has origins in
Eastern Europe but the style of
wines and quantity of old vines
still producing makes it a
unique California product. Most
winemakers agree old vine
Zinfandel has flavor
characteristics not possible
with younger vines. Graphite,
licorice and slate are elements
usually only found in old-vine
Zinfandel. Many Zinfandel
vineyards in California still
have blocks dating back almost
100 years and sometimes more.
This is the first of our "Head
Pruned" series and is zeroing in
on Old Vine Zinfandel Vineyards
in Napa." - Steve

2004 Tin Barn Dalraddy Vineyard
19.99 (10% off btc)
The Dalraddy Vineyard is located in the
hills of the Chiles Valley area of Napa
Valley. This 34 year-old vineyard is a
perfect Zinfandel site. The old, head pruned
vines have excellent sun exposure, are
protected from the hot afternoon sun by the
shady hillsides and have been farmed
organically by the same man (Luis Renteria)
for 30+ years!
"This
Zinfandel is drinking beautifully right now.
It is ripe and elegant with Cherry,
Raspberry, white chocolate, clove, and
coconut notes. The tannins are very mild and
the finish is clean and refreshing."

2004 Terraces Zinfandel Napa Valley
24.99
Known officially as "The Terraces at Quarry
Vineyards" and located in the eastern
foothills of Rutherford, Quarry Vineyards
was first settled as a homestead in the
1870s. In 1881, Charles Scheggia purchased
the property and planted the first vines.
Using stone quarried on the property, the
old winery was completed in 1885. In 1920,
the Werle family purchased the property for
$10.00. For the next 72 years, they produced
a field blend of Zinfandel grapes. The Crull
family purchased the Werle property in 1993
and renamed it Quarry Vineyards in reference
to its history as a working rock quarry.
"Concentrated fruit aromas of blackberries
and boysenberries are well-supported by
creamy, roasted vanilla and cocoa notes and
are further lifted by hints of rich soils
and black licorice. This one is full in body
and nicely balanced across the palate
without any resort to heaviness or
over ripeness, and its long, rich flavors
reach the finish fully intact even as
youthful tannins make an expected appearance
at the end. This is a most impressive
Zinfandel, and while some will wish to enjoy
it now, we would counsel that it be laid
away for a few years."

2005 Green & Red Zinfandel Chiles Mill
Vineyard
27.99
"Green & Red Vineyard, named for its red
iron soils veined with green serpentine, is
located in the steep hills on the east side
of Napa Valley. The planting was started in
1972 on ground originally in vineyards in
the 1890's. Not that old in the scope of
Zinfandel but still a very unique micro
climate and the wines do have old vine feel
and character. The vineyard is located at
elevations from 1000 to 1700 feet,
overlooking upper Chiles Canyon and remnant
walls of the grist mill built by pioneer J.B.
Chiles. These red hillside vineyards
produce a vigorous, spicy black pepper and
berried wine. There is elegance and grace
here unique to Chiles Valley."

Wines of forward fruit, supple balance and
sensual promise. If the exuberance of youth
is a key to your enjoyment of Zinfandel,
this is your wine.
"The 2003
Zinfandel Mayacamas Range reveals a deep
ruby/purple-tinged color, and an earthy,
peppery nose with lusciously sweet black
cherry and currant scents. A refined,
elegant California Zinfandel with medium
body, excellent purity, and sweet,
well-integrated tannin. It should drink well
for 5-7 years."

2005 Terraces Zinfandel Napa Valley
29.99
"Its richness, its underlying polish and the
purity of its fruit run from start to finish
without giving up any ground to excess. It
is supple and remarkably well-balanced, and
it promises to build upon its blackberry,
cola, toast, creme brulee complexities for
years to come."

2005 Ravenswood Zinfandel Dickerson Vineyard
29.99
"This has
been one of my favorite Zinfandel sites for
many years and I can still remember several
magical bottles of 1990 that aged
beautifully. The last one drank just a year
or two ago. This vineyard is dry farmed,
organically cultivated and harvested by
hand. Robert Parker, Jr. once said about
Dickerson Zinfandel 'I thought I was
smelling 1959 Mouton Rothschild....amazing
but true'. He labeled Dickerson 'the Heitz
Martha's Vineyard of Zinfandel'. The Wall
Street Journal acclaimed the 1992 'Best
Zinfandel tasted in a decade'. Gourmet
Magazine's Gerald Asher placed Dickerson
Zinfandels 'now among the finest wines -
regardless of variety - produced in
California'."

2005 Elyse Zinfandel Korte Ranch Napa Valley
29.99 (10% off btc)
"The 2005
Korte Ranch Zinfandel is deep ruby/purple
colored with aromas of wild red berries,
roasted nuts and crème de cassis. On the
palate, a long lasting finish follows
flavors of fresh berry pie, plums and
blackberry jam with just a touch of white
pepper. This rich ripe Zinfandel is weighty
on the palate, yet surprisingly keeps its
balance in check. Pair with beef stew, ribs,
barbecue or smoked meats."
