Ben Glaetzer |
Ben Glaetzer is
producing some of Australia's most
iconic wines, including but not limited
to Amon Ra and Mitolo's GAM. His single
vineyard wines from the Barossa Valley
represent a true value. Not only is Ben
implementing traditional winemaking
techniques with a modern flair but also
as a consultant, on his newest project
Gomersal.
The Gomersal
vineyard dates back to 1887, when it was
originally named Fromm's vineyard. In
2001, the property was purchased and
renamed, Gomersal. Ben Glaetzer was
hired on to bring his attention to
detail and drive to produce wines of
distinction that represent true values.
The resulting wine is a single vineyard,
dry farmed Shiraz from low yielding
older vines with intense flavors and a
long finish.

2005
Gomersal Vineyard Shiraz Bacchantes Barossa
14.99
Intense and juicy, with a bouquet that jumps
across the table, this under-priced juvenile
is wholesome, perky and disarming. Over a
faint morning hearth of slightly sooty oak
there's a heap of rich, fat fruit, supported
by lovely dry medium-grained tannins. As the
wine ever-so-gradually recedes, its firm
acidity and tannin sets the salivatories
gushing, driving the drinker to tucker. And
another glass. It'll last 15 years, growing
smoother for the first 10.

2004 Mitolo Shiraz GAM
McLaren Vale
49.99
An exceptional example of a precise yet
full-flavored, concentrated Shiraz. Its
gorgeous perfume of blueberries,
blackberries, camphor, licorice, and pain
grille is followed by an
inky/blue/purple-colored wine offering
superb purity, full-bodied richness, and
gorgeous depth as well as texture. It should
drink well for 15 years.

2005 Mitolo Shiraz Reiver Barossa Valley
49.99
The 2005 Shiraz Reiver, made from
60-year-old Shiraz vines in the Greenock
area of the Barossa. Its inky/blue/purple
hue is followed by a lovely perfume of
flowers, blackberries, espresso, and
licorice. It offers stunning richness and
length, and should drink well for 10-12
years.

2005 Mitolo Shiraz The
Savitar McLaren Vale
59.99
Named after a mythical monster, the 2005
Shiraz Savitar emerges from rocky, low vigor
soils. Dazzling aromas of acacia flowers,
blueberries, crushed rocks, graphite,
licorice, and espresso roast emerge from
this tightly knit but intense, fleshy, rich
effort. Its multilayered palate, huge body,
sweet tannin, and "monster" finish suggest
this brilliant wine will be drinkable
between 2008 and 2020. 96

2005 Glaetzer Wallace
Barossa Valley
17.99
80% Shiraz from 65-year-old vines and 20%
Grenache from 90-year-old bush vines. It
exhibits a lovely perfume of cedar, tobacco,
damp earth, black cherry and blueberry. This
leads to a concentrated, structured wine
with ripe blue and black fruit flavors,
well-concealed tannin, and a long finish.
This excellent value can be enjoyed over the
next 8-10 years. 92

2004 Glaetzer The
Bishop Shiraz Barossa
SOLD OUT!
Smooth and round, with a fine zing of
acidity to balance the rich, classic cherry,
blackberry and licorice flavors, hinting at
Provençal herbs and black pepper as the
finish sails on and on. Beautifully balanced
and harmonious, this is built to grow with
age. Best from 2010 through 2020.

2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Barossa
59.99
Produced from 80- to 150-year-old dry farmed
vineyards in the northern Ebenezer sector of
the Barossa. This larger-than-life,
fascinating wine (cropped at .25 to 1 ton of
fruit per acre) offers big, sweet,
blackberry and cassis characteristics
intermixed with notions of smoke, licorice,
and pain grille. A wine of amazing extract,
richness, and full-bodied power, with great
purity as well as balance, this stunning
offering should age effortlessly for 15 or
more years.

2005 Godolphin Barossa
47.99
(10% off btc of 6)
A blend of 80% Shiraz (from 85-year-old
vines) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon (from
60-year-old vines), was aged in 100% new
oak. It represents a beautiful marriage of
power and elegance, displaying an
inky/blue/purple color as well as notions of
black raspberries, blueberries, graphite,
and sweet pain grille. Ripe, pure, and
medium to full-bodied with sweet but
noticeable tannin, it can be drunk now or
cellared for 12-15 years.

2004 Amon Ra Shiraz
Barossa
69.99
(from vines between 100 and 120 years of
age) Saturated violet. Amazingly complex
bouquet of crème de cassis, candied
blackberry, fresh flowers, cocoa powder and
minerals. Pulls off the feat of being dense
and sweet but also bright and lively, with
potent dark berry, kirsch and licorice candy
flavors that deepen with air. The tannins,
if you can find them under the mountain of
flavor, are fine-grained and wonderfully
supple. This wine's purity of fruit, along
with its precision and richness, made it one
of the most dramatic wines of my tastings.

2006 Amon Ra Shiraz
Barossa
79.99 (74.99 btc of 6)
Made from 100% Shiraz sourced from vineyards
ranging in age from 80-120 years and with
microscopic yields of 0.5 tons per acre. The
wine is a thick, glass-coating, purple/black
in color. The aromas cover a wide range of
scents including smoke, vanilla, pepper,
Asian spices, coconut, espresso, blueberry,
and chocolate. Thick, rich, layered, and
complete, this monumental wine offers
extraordinary intensity and length. It
requires 10-15 years to fully evolve and
should easily last through 2040. 97-100
