Casanova di Neri
A Great Italian
Estate
|
"We
have been very lucky
with so many excellent
years recently,"
says Giacomo Neri,
owner of Casanova di
Neri, producers of
last
year's Wine of the
Year, the 2001
Casanova di Neri
Brunello di
Montalcino
Tenuta Nuova. "The
2003 is very good
and will be out next
year, but the
2004, 2005, and 2006
that follow will be
sensational," Neri
adds.
-James Suckling, The
Wine Spectator, Oct. 31,
2007
Dear Friends,
A top Brunello delivers the
depth and richness wine
lovers crave, along with a
freshness and character
that's unique to Tuscany.
Casanova di Neri is one
of the best examples of the
recent renaissance of
winemaking in Tuscany.
Giacomo Neri, of the
family-run Casanova di Neri
winery grows some of the
most beautiful grapes in
Montalcino. Their vineyards
located in both the northern
and southern parts of the
region are tended like
award-winning gardens.
Yields are kept to a
minimum to ensure
concentrated grapes.
Giacomo keeps the winemaking
simple, aiming to gently
extract the goodness and
character inherent in the
grapes. Aging is done in
large 600-liter oak casks to
minimize oak flavors.
Perhaps this is why the
Casanova di Neri Tenuta
Nuova Brunellos always have
such an impressive purity of
fruit, as well as an
excellent balance of refined
yet powerful tannins.*
I would estimate I taste
100 wines from Montalcino
area annually both abroad
and locally. Amazingly
Casanova di Neri has 2-3
wines among my top ten from
Montalcino every year. The
Brunello di Montalcino
Tenuta Nouva is the most
classic wine offered and is
always among the best
Brunellos of the region. The
Cerretalto is a
super-Brunello that pushes
the limits and is an
incredible world-class wine
of first-growth quality. It
is very
rare and hard to
get. The Brunello di
Montalcino white label is an
excellent value with quality
close to Tenuta Nuova but at
a fraction of the
price. I've enjoyed this
wine in Italy many times but
this is the first time it
has been available in the
U.S. in any significant
quantity. I highly recommend
it as a great value. Pietradonice
is one of top Cabernet
Sauvignon based wines from
Tuscany.

2006 Casanova de Neri
Rosso di
Casanova
Price: 23.99
"This
is 100% Sangviovese from
grapes grown in
Montalcino and Sant
Antimo. It is more
complex and superior to
just about every Rosso
di Montalcino on the
market. Full bodied yet
elegant it almost has a
burgundian elegance and
sense of terroir.
Powerful yet delicious
right now" 90SR |
2003 Casanova di Neri
Brunello di Montalcino
(White Label)
Price: 49.99
Reviews: 93SR
"I'm
really excited this wine
is finally available
stateside. It's a great
introduction to Casanova
di Neri Brunellos and
probably the best
Brunello value available
in the world. The
concentrated, ripe and
powerful house style
shines through here."

2003 Casanova di Neri
Brunello di Montalcino
Tenuta Nuova
Price:
69.99
Reviews: 92WS, 93SR
"Intense aromas of
blackberry, licorice and
black cherry.
Full-bodied, with fine
tannins and a chewy
finish. Has impressive
structure for the
vintage. Very well-made.
Best after 2011."
Wine Spectator
"More intense and in
need of aging than the
white label. This is a
classic Brunello
exhibiting rich fruit
terroir, depth and great
length. Drinks well now
but will benefit greatly
from 3-5 years of age."

This is one of the

"Subtle yet rich
for the vintage, with
cedar, blackberry and
licorice aromas.
Full-bodied, with lovely
silky tannins and a
long, flavorful finish.
Layers of refined,
polished tannins."

2005 Casanova di Neri
Pietradonice
Price:
99.99
Reviews: 94SR
"This is 100% Cabernet
Sauvignon. This is the
first vintage where
there is no Sangiovese
or Merlot in the blend.
Rich, full and bright. "Onice"
means onyx and is a
reference to the large
amount of onyx found in
this vineyard." Steve
