Understanding Great Italian Wine
Begins with Brunello.
"If
you want to understand what great Italian wine
is all about, buy a bottle of Brunello. No wine
in Italy matches Tuscany's Brunello di
Montalcino when it comes to age-ability. And
over the past decade, no other Italian region
(with the possible exception of Barolo) has
enjoyed so many outstanding vintages and made so
many beautiful wines.
Brunello's rise to stardom has been
startling in its speed and impressive in its
breadth. In the great 2001 vintage, I gave
two Brunellos perfect 100-point scores. This
would hardly have been possible just two
decades ago because the region was hindered
by archaic viticulture and outmoded
winemaking. Now dozens of producers are
making some of the best wines in Italy, and
their clear dedication to fine winemaking
rivals any in the world."

2001 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
139.99
"Wonderfully perfumed, with rose, blackberry
and a hint of wet earth. Full-bodied, with
layers of silky tannins and a long, long
finish. Structured. Hard not to drink now,
but will be even better with a little more
bottle age. Best after 2009." 97
points, Wine Spectator, April 30, 2007

1997 Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino
49.99
Deep ruby with a garnet core. Opens with
appealing smells of sottobosco, tobacco, wet
soil and spicy cedar. Redolent of overripe
fruit, primarily plum jam, and a heady mix of
earthy flavors and fresh road tar. In spite of a
pronounced acid bite the abundant tannins are
suave, and there is an impression of density and
weight. The long finish carries an aftertaste of
roasted chestnuts. 91 Points, Steve

2002 |
1997 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino
59.99
Dark ruby, with a garnet core. Red fruit scents
interlaced with spicy cedar. High-toned, nicely
delineated flavors of red plum, raspberry,
cranberry and red currant. A medium-bodied,
lighter style of Brunello with a supple
structure; a wine of grace rather than power.
90 Points, Steve Tanzer's International
Wine Cellar, July/August 2002 |

1995 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino
99.99
Deep, dark
ruby-garnet. Full, sweet, nuanced and spicy
on the nose, with very ripe plum and oak in
perfect harmony. Dense, sustained, and very
long; successfully combines weight and
elegance. A strong, classy Brunello of real
breed. 92 Points, Stephen Tanzer's,
International Wine Cellar, Issue 91
