2022 Domaine Christian Clerget Echezeaux Grand Cru En Orveaux (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Echezeaux, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We were thrilled to come across this small parcel of excellent 2022s from a domaine that is highly coveted among collectors, yet which has very little presence in the U.S. market. Now run by Justine Clerget, this fourth-generation domaine makes a miniscule quantity of wine from some truly enviable holdings in Chambolle, Vosne, Morey, and Vougeot.

Leading off, the 2022 Morey-St-Denis Les Crais Blanc (the only white made by Clerget) is "really well balanced, the best I remember" according Japser Morris of Inside Burgundy, offering a rare example of what Chardonnay can achieve in this Pinot Noir-dominated appellation. "Worth seeking out" per Vinous' Neal Martin is the village Chambolle-Musigny for its "sense of vibrancy and tension ... with a very well-controlled and persistent finish," while the "beautifully layered" Chambolle-Musigny Aux Croix presents a sharp buy for collectors looking to maximize their purchasing power. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes with its "joyous, almost rumbustious energy" and "silky smooth texture" is a quintessential example of this lieu-dit that will cruise for years, right alongside the "well delineated and linear" Echezeaux En Orveaux that Morris declares "will emerge as a charming and graceful" rendition in the due course of time.

One look at the current market for Clerget's wines will tell you that opportunities like this don't come along often, and with only limited quantities available to us, serious collectors should jump at the chance to add these boutique beauties to their cellars.

95JM 94V 94BH

A lovely vibrant mid purple. A touch of oak on the nose but otherwise a fine and graceful red berry fruit. It is understated, fine but not the most intense. Still, this will emerge as a charming and graceful Echezeaux in the medium term. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2023.

93-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Echézeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru has a very satisfying bouquet, beautifully defined, with lifted brambly red fruit, sous-bois and incense aromas. The palate is well delineated and linear in style, with gentle grip. Perhaps it just requires a tad more flesh on the finish, but I feel this is only because this Echézeaux is a bit closed at the moment. Good potential—patience required. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.

92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2024)

An even spicier nose reflects slightly riper aromas of poached plum, violet, exotic tea and a touch of anise. There is better volume to the rich and caressing middleweight plus flavors that exhibit good muscle on the dusty and quite serious finish that offers better persistence on the more structured finish that displays fine depth and balance. This is clearly built-to-age so patience again strongly recommended.

91-94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound (Jan 2024)

2020 Meo-Camuzet Les Rouges du Bas (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Echezeaux, Burgundy, France

95WA 93V

The 2020 Échezeaux Grand Cru Les Rouges du Bas bursts with aromas of ripe cherries, berries and plums, mingled with notions of rose petals, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Full-bodied, ample and dramatic, it's broad and enveloping, with succulent acids and a rich core of fruit.

93-95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a crisp, quite pure bouquet with a mixture of red and blue fruit, a touch of violet, maybe just a bit pinched at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, quite chewy compared to others and at the moment, this just attenuates a little on the finish. I need to be more convinced by this cuvée, at the moment, surpassed by their top-notch Premier Crus.

91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Dec 2021)

2022 Jean Grivot Echezeaux Grand Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Echezeaux, Burgundy, France

97D 96WS

With its ripe, deep, plummy fruit, floral notes and abundant spice accents, the 2022 Echézeaux from Grivot is among the top wines in this cellar. The texture is rich and velvety; the finish stretches on for minutes. The grapes are from a 0.84-hectare parcel in Cruots planted in 1954. Grivot destems the grapes and ferments gently, with more pumping exclusively after the beginning of fermentation. This vintage will begin to open in five to seven years and should drink well for at least another 30.

97 points, Charles Curtis, Decanter (Nov 2023)

Well-marked by toasty oak and vanilla aromas and flavors, this red also features cherry, blackberry, raspberry, earth and iron notes. Dense and robust, with a sense of elegance, fine purity, balance and length, yet there's a feeling that this has more to give with some evolution in the bottle.

2023 Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot Echezeaux Grand Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Echezeaux, Burgundy, France

97JM 95V

Medium purple. There is very little nose initially, needing teasing out, but refined, certainly. Thomas Collardot thinks the 2023 is better than 2022 because of its subtlety and I can certainly see some of this quality in the mouth. Wavelets of fresh red berries, just a little pepper and lacy detail. I will settle on parity with 2022. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.

95-97 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a lovely bouquet with brambly red fruit, sous-bois and touches of pressed rose petal blossoming in the glass. There is very fine delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It is quite svelte in texture, with pinpoint acidity and a mineral-laden finish that lingers long in the mouth. This cuvée actually surpasses the 2022.

2023 Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux Grand Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Echezeaux, Burgundy, France

96D

The Echézeaux from Mugneret-Gibourg is superb. There is a lovely concentration of ripe mulberry and black plum fruit with hints of peony, pepper, and earth. The texture is initially dense and velvety, but as the wine lingers moreishly on the palate it is obvious that there are substantial tannins that bode well for ageing. The grapes are from three-quarters of a hectare in Rouges de Bas and Quartier de Nuit; they are fermented with 12% whole clusters (since 2016), which Marie-Andrée feels accounts for the floral element in the wine.
