"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous..." - Jeb Dunnuck

No name in California wine history is as synonymous with Napa Cabernet as Robert Mondavi. Sourced from this revered estate's iconic To Kalon vineyard, an undisputed California "grand cru," the 2021 The Estates Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon makes the most of its pedigree and this acclaimed Napa vintage. A bevy of glowing praise, including 95 points from Decanter and 94 points each from Antonio Galloni and Jeb Dunnuck, confirms the wine's place as yet another benchmark expression of the valley's most famous AVA. "A wine of gravitas and power, the 2021 has a lot to offer," notes Galloni, who goes on to praise "a new level of energy and vibrancy in the Mondavi wines that is compelling." Rather than rest on their laurels, the team at Mondavi have redoubled their efforts to keep turning out stunning renditions such as this, and fans of expertly crafted Napa Valley Cabernet can add it to their cellars at a remarkable, sub-$60 price that's handily beats the rest of the market.

What an easy-drinking 2021 Cabernet from this legendary Napa producer. It's a beautifully classic wine with intensely aromatic, flavour-packed fruit redolent of blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry, tinged with smoky cedarwood. The full-bodied palate is marked by persistent tannins and a satisfying finish revealing notes of earth, river stones, dried herbs, and a firm spine of acidity—a wine to enjoy throughout a great meal. Nearly half the fruit is sourced from Oakville, with additional grapes from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak barrels.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous, with pure cassis and darker blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and spicy wood. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously layered, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins and just a kiss of background oak. There are roughly 11,000 cases, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in the market, and it's going to drink well for at least 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Intense blackberries and black cherries on the nose lead to vivid focused cherries, blueberries and minty, spicy accents on the palate. Firm in tannins and fresh with good acidity, this outstanding wine is well-balanced. Enjoyable now but best from 2027.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

An extroverted style, with a burst of mint and boysenberry notes leading off, followed by steeped plum and black currant preserve flavors. There's a nice graphite note running underneath the fruit before this ends with a licorice accent that rounds off the finish. Drink now through 2038. 900 cases made.

2022 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

92WE 92D 90WA

A very good introduction to Napa Valley cabernet for drinkers who are unfamiliar. This offers ripe, generous red and black fruit on a velvety texture of fine-grained tannins. Black cherries, dark plums and blackberries come up in the aroma and then go deeper on the palate. Contains 7% petit verdot, 8% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. Aged in all French barrels, 31% new, which add accents of cinnamon and cedar. Drink now or hold.

92 points, Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was tasted with Kurtis Ogasawara, Director of Winemaking, who joined Mondavi in 2015 after previous roles at Newton and Chandon. A solid representation of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine sources fruit from St. Helena down to Carneros, with the bulk of the blend coming from the Wappo Hill property in Stags Leap. All five Bordeaux varieties are included in the blend. Fermentation begins with a cold soak in stainless steel, followed by 26 days on skins, and 18 months of ageing in 31% new French oak. The wine opens with powerful Kirsch aromatics, lifted by bright Bing cherry, warm baking spices, new wood cedar, and white pepper. It is plush and layered on the palate, with black-toned fruit and robust, lingering tannins that carry through a long finish of dark red and black fruit, warming spices, and mineral tension. A balanced expression of power and fruit-forward ripeness, this vintage showcases both depth and structure, making for a bold yet polished Napa Cabernet.

92 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Feb 2025)

Mondavi's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa spans five Bordeaux varieties and several AVAs, with the largest components coming from Stags Leap District and Oakville. Aged in French oak (38% new) for 18 months, it's excellent entry-level stuff, boasting gentle black cherries, loam and cinnamon notes. Full-bodied, it's soft and supple, almost suede-like in feel, with some mocha and dark chocolate notes on the slightly warm finish. Enjoy it on the young side over the next several years.

2021 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98D 97JD 97JS

2021 Robert Mondavi The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully crafted wine with impressive intensity, depth, and a balanced structure that carries the day. From the To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, the portion owned by Constellation, comes this blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Pure blackberry fruit, cassis, graphite, and violet aromas leap from the glass, nuanced by fragrant, toasty new cedar wood. Full-bodied, framed by an array of plush dark black fruit notes, currants, crème de cassis, and polished tannins that are firm and elongated, with ironstone mineral accents. Dynamic in its length and texture, it is utterly intriguing, with a beckoning quality that lingers after each sip. You want to know precisely where this wine is going—demanding your attention.

98 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve To Kalon Vineyard is based on 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was raised 20 months in new barrels. Dense black fruits, violets, spicy, chocolaty oak, and scorched earth-like nuances all define the aromatics, and this beauty is full-bodied, with a layered, opulent mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. I love its overall layered, broad, expansive profile, and as with most 2021s, it's built for the long haul. Hide bottles for 5-7 years if you can, and it should have 2-3 decades of overall longevity.

97+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2025)

Wow, Mondavi’s top red wine is very impressive in 2021, all svelte but muscular and built for long-term enjoyment. A bit richer and more layered than the 2018 and 2016, and the signature sage character is subdued here. Showing great black fruit and flowers with integrated oak spices on the nose, the tannins building as you sip, black cherries, blackcurrants, cocoa and light graphite showing on the palate. So smooth and full-bodied but not heavy, lifted by fresh acidity and very fine-grained tannins. From organically grown grapes. Bottles from the 1990s are still great to drink, so no hurry to open it. Try from 2028.

2022 Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc Oakville (750ml)
Sauvignon Blanc from Napa, California

94JD 93JS 92WS

The 2022 Fumé Blanc reminds me of a great Pessac-Léognan Blanc and offers a classy, pure, balanced style that's just a joy to drink. Honeyed citrus, chalky minerality, minty flowers, and a kiss of white pepper all shine in this medium-bodied, focused, lively white that brings rock-solid intensity and depth while staying balanced. It's impeccably made, and while I love it today, I wouldn't be shocked to see it evolve gracefully over the coming 10-12 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2025)

A mouth-filling, complex take on sauvignon blanc sourced from Mondavi's own To Kalon vineyard. It offers light herbs like tarragon and thyme, then bright, bold citrus and snappy green apple flavors on the mid-palate and finish. Largely barrel-fermented and using 23% new French oak. Shows good depth, balance and length. Drink now.

93 points, Jim Gordon, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

Fleshy and juicy, like biting into a juicy white peach, with accents of fresh ginger and yellow apple, plus whiffs of lanolin and honeycomb that add a savory element. Hints of litsea oil and marmalade linger on the long finish. Drink now. 1,425 cases made.

2024 Robert Mondavi Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Napa, California

94D 92JS

The Napa Valley Chardonnay is sourced primarily from Carneros, with additional fruit from Wappo Hill in Stags Leap, and a small portion from Alexander Valley, which lends a touch of florality and elegance. Barrel-fermented with bâtonnage, the wine shows a deft balance of ripe citrus and orchard fruit, accented by a kiss of toasty oak spice and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is sleek, with notes of tangerine oil, candied ginger, and grilled peach, all carried by a saline acidity that drives a mouthwatering finish. Nicely balanced and expressive for the price point.

94 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Feb 2026)

Delicious, showing spiced apples, vanilla bean, lemon curd and poached pears. Full-bodied and well-balanced, this is nicely rich yet backed by mouthwatering acidity. A generous wine from a warm, ripe vintage. Barrel-fermented on the lees, using 40% new French oak. Drink now.
