A blend of rums matured from 10 to 30 years. The gorgeous deep amber/burnished copper color is quite an eyeful; impeccable clarity. The first nosing detects a startling array of layered aromas, from vanilla bean to cinnamon to nut paste to maple to caramel – this is molasses-based rum at its international finest; following six minutes of aeration, the nut aspect jumps out as does a hint of bourbon; a clinic on what oak-aged rum should be aromatically. Entry is ideally balanced between vigor/freshness and oaky maturity; midpalate offers a menu of flavors, including most prominently, sweet, charred oak, almond paste/nougat, vegetable oil, and maple. Ends up graceful yet potent. Mount Gay’s pinnacle achievement.
5 out of 5 stars, The Spirit Journal
Among the most aromatic rums, with a rich, thick caramel perfume. On the palate, this honey-colored spirit, made from a blend of rums aged from 10 to 30 years, is full bodied and viscous. It has an oaky flavor mixed with tropical fruit and a powerful burnt-toffee finish. Rather heavy on the alcohol; it ought to be a sipping rum, but it’s so boozy it burns the tongue.
