The label on this light caramel-brown liquid says it’s blended “for aromatic intensity.” Mission accomplished: The aromas are indeed intense, with sweet, high bursts of burnt caramel and orange peel, opening up to a slightly chocolaty fragrance. On the tongue, this one is a big, solid block of flavor, with lots of caramel from start to finish, adding some coffee and dark chocolate notes at the end. Despite the big-brute flavor, it has a mellow finish.

The nose is very and unevolved in first minutes; only minimal stimulation brought about by aeration in the forms of faint pear and wood scents. Far better in the mouth, as focused tastes of ripe grapes, old oak resin and candied nuts greet the taste buds; midpalate shows a bit of fire along with fruit, wood and spirit. Finishes sweet, balanced and fruity.

Stylistically, this is 18th-century Grand Fine Champagne Cognac. A blend of 50-year-old cognac by Jacky Navarre bottled at 90 proof. The Old Reserve is labeled as "Vieille Reserve." This is a time machine experience. Chances are, you have never experienced Cognac like this. Its tough enough to find 50-year-old Cognac, but Jacky transports you to another time when both proof and age were much higher numbers. Cellared riverside as was Bordeaux back then, humidities affect exchanges over the course of 50 years with the barrel, evaporation, and adds soul. Authentic to a previous time, but here now.
