Roederer Estate Brut (750ml)
Sparkling from Anderson Valley, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “the best and most consistent sparkling wine producer on the West Coast” by the Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish, the vibrant 94 pt. Roederer Estate NV Brut lives up to Louis Roederer Champagne's iconic reputation, offering appealing layers of fresh fruit hinting of brioche with crisp acidity and a finely beaded mousse, an unmatched value in California sparkling wine bargain priced to enjoy freely now and over the next few years.

Founded by the family-owned Louis Roederer Champagne over four decades ago, Roederer Estate was established in Mendocino County’s foggy Anderson Valley as a “grower house” that sources its grapes exclusively from 620 acres of estate vineyards. Considered an outlier at the time with most sparkling producers setting up shop in Napa Valley, fifth generation descendent and then president Jean-Claude Rouzard believed the terroir in remote Mendocino County was perfect for the champagne house’s sparkling wine project, the cooling waves of fog off the Pacific balanced by warmer daytime temperatures allowing the grapes to mature slowly and develop rich phenolic complexity while maintaining acidity. Over its 41 year history, consistency has played another key role in Roederer Estate’s success, with only two winemakers, both of French origins, producing the estate’s cuvees and currently under the direction of Alsace-born Arnaud Weyrich who took the reins in 2002. A blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, Roederer Estate’s vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed with meticulous consideration of the estate’s varied range of clay and gravel soils guiding viticulture, their proximity to the winery ensuring a quick pressing at harvest. Adding 15% of the estate’s oak-aged reserve wines spanning five vintages to the blend, the Roederer Estate Brut was fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and precision and aged for 2 ½ years on the lees, yielding a Champagne-style, mineral driven sparkling wine with layered fruit and a savory creaminess that rises on a stream of steady small bubbles, finishing with a citrus acidity and brightness that’s “delightful” according to James Suckling.

In an interview with the Wine Spectator, winemaker Weyrich reiterated the key element the 94 pt. Roederer Estate Brut NV shares with all exceptional wines, noting “Something speaks underneath all these wines, and it’s the sense of place,” the terroir-driven Roederer Estate Brut NV an easy choice for Champagne lovers and fans of complex sparkling wines seeking value to stock the cooler and reach for without hesitation, this outstanding price its own reason to celebrate.

Hints of phenolics provide a fine texture. Vibrant acidity. About 15% reserve wine (mostly chardonnay) in this, from five vintages. 2.5 years on the lees. 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir. Drink or hold.

Among the first to recognize the region’s potential for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Beringer has owned and farmed its vineyards in Knights Valley for over a half century, first to feature it on a label in 1974 and instrumental in the AVA gaining an official designation in 1983. Situated in a pastoral setting northwest of the winery, Beringer’s sustainably farmed 600-acre vineyard in Knights Valley is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of other Bordeaux varietals in well-draining, rocky volcanic soils, enjoying the warmest daytime temperatures in Sonoma with cool evenings that preserve the grapes’ acidity. A duo of delicious, highly rated Riojas delivering exceptional value, the fresh, fruit-driven 92 pt. 2018 Bodegas Beronia Reserva and the richly textured 94 pt. 2013 Bodegas Beronia Gran Reserva balance juicy red Tempranillo fruit with vibrant acidity, two outstanding selections expertly aged for Spanish wine lovers seeking bargain priced Riojas to enjoy without hesitation.

Established in Rioja Alta in 1973, Bodegas Beronia was created by a group of friends from the Basque region seeking to produce well priced Riojas to enjoy at their gastronomic get-togethers, naming it for the area’s ancient Celtic settlers called “berones.” Producing the Reserva and Gran Reserva as their first releases, Beronia sources its Rioja from 20 hectares of estate vineyards as well as 870 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards within a 10-kilometer radius of the winery, managed by the winery team to ensure quality. enabling them to exercise optimum control over the quality. Described as “an outstanding Rioja Reserva here to enjoy now or in the next five years” by James Suckling, longtime Beronia winemaker Matias Calleja blended mostly Tempranillo with a little Graciana and Mazuelo to enhance freshness in the 2018 Beronia Reserva, aging it for 18 months in specially designed barrels crafted with American oak staves and French oak lids and cellaring it 18 months longer in bottle to reveal richly layered fruit with notes of toasted vanilla and smooth, integrated tannins. Crafted from old vine Tempranillo ranging to over 70 years of age, the rich and decadent 94 pt. 2013 Beronia Gran Reserva was aged 27 months in French oak barrels followed by another three years in bottle prior to release, yielding a "fresh and enticing" Rioja according to the Wine Spectator's Alison Napjus with “fine-grained, creamy tannins" and layers of complexity that will continue to evolve over the next decade.

Deep violet to the eye, this wine has a nose of black plum, dark chocolate and dried hillside herbs. Bold red berry flavors are joined by plush tannins and deeper notes of mocha, truffle and thyme. As flavors and textures wind down on the palate, a note of orange zest remains.

2021 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

While it's hard to find a consistently great deal in Napa Cab let alone two, these Chappellet selections fill the bill, reflecting their decades’ long quality legacy as pioneers on Napa’s iconic Pritchard Hill, the lush 92 pt. 2021 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee offering luscious mouth coating fruit for immediate enjoyment and the powerfully built 95 pt. Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature boasting layers of rich dark fruit with a robust age worthy structure declared “a smoking good value” by Jeb Dunnuck, both unbeatably priced whether choosing a favorite or mixing a case.

Among the first in Napa to produce wines from mountain grown fruit, the family-owned Chappellet winery has been crafting exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux style blends on Napa Valley's renowned Pritchard Hill for over five decades, releasing its first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1969 and scoring a perfect 100 pt. rating from the Wine Advocate. Although most vineyards at the time were planted on the valley floor, Donn and Molly Chappellet purchased 320 acres high in the rugged hills east of Oakville on the advice of legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff in the late 1960’s, establishing their winery just a year after the Robert Mondavi Winery opened its doors. Remaining one of the few family-owned wineries in the region and now run by their children, Chappellet’s estate vineyards are located above the fog line at elevations from 800 to 1800 feet, planted in well drained, rocky volcanic soils with low yielding vines that produce smaller, thick skinned berries with enhanced flavors and depth. Blending some of their mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon with traditional Bordeaux varietals, the 92 pt. 2021 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee offers fragrant, fresh fruit hinting of vanilla and spice with seamless tannins and a velvety smooth finish, a versatile red blend crafted for near-term enjoyment that’s equally delicious whether sipped alone or paired with food. Described as a “serious wine in the making” by Jeb Dunnuck, the bold and elegant 95 pt. 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature features rich, aromatic dark fruit hinting of graphite and cedar layered with lush tannins on a smooth and lasting finish, “a big overachiever” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous boasting several decades of age worthy complexity and among Napa’s top value Cabs.

Priced at a fraction of their higher profile Pritchard Hill neighbors, the high scoring 92 pt. 2021 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee and 95 pt. Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature are both winning choices for Napa Cab lovers seeking an outstanding value, whether selecting the luscious Mountain Cuvee to enjoy now or the age worthy Cabernet Sauvignon Signature to savor for years to come or enjoying the best of both worlds with some of each.

Garnering top ratings across the board placing it among Napa’s top values, the silky and enticing 92 pt. 2019 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon offers lush dark fruit hinting of savory spice and toasty vanilla with luscious, smooth tannins, sourced from an outstanding vintage producing “big, bold wines that show the extroverted side of Napa Valley,” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous and following in the footsteps of Far Niente's high scoring Cabs at a fraction of the price.

Established by the team behind Far Niente and Nickel and Nickel in 2012, Bella Union is based on Bella Oaks Lane in Rutherford, deriving its name from the road formerly known as the Bella Union Roadway that led through the Mayacamas Mountains to the Bella Union Mining Company in the 1880's and crafting its Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend primarily from its 25-acre estate vineyard. Long considered a prime growing site, the Bella Oaks vineyard designation has appeared on the labels of esteemed wineries throughout the years including Heitz Cellar and more recently Staglin, the area’s well-draining, gravelly soils known for contributing Rutherford’s characteristic minerality and fine tannins. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with vines ranging up to 30 years of age, the Bella Union vineyard boasts the ideal combination of warm, sunny days and cool evenings typical of its location on the western Rutherford Bench, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and developing layers of rich complexity. Blending 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot with small amounts of Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the appealing 2019 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced mainly from the Rutherford vineyard as well as parcels in Calistoga, St. Helena and Oak Knoll and aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months, described as “supple and easygoing, with a nicely textured, silky feel on the finish” by the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski and poised to deliver pleasurable drinking now and over the coming decade.

2020 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas (750ml)
From Gigondas, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Gigondas delivers some of the best bang for my buck in cellar-worthy red wines from France today."

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

A favorite producer of B-21 Rhone fans and collectors offering incredible quality at an unbeatable value, Domaine du Cayron’s 96 pt. 2020 Gigondas hits the mark once again, easily eclipsing many pricier blends from neighboring Chateauneuf-du-Pape with its bright fragrant garrigue-scented fruit and seamless tannins poised to “age reliably and gracefully” according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, a superb value for stocking the cellar.

Located in the heart of Gigondas in the shadow of the craggy saw-toothed Dentelles de Montmirail, fifth generation sisters Roseline, Cendrine, and Delphine source their family’s single cuvee from old vines planted at some of the appellation’s highest altitudes, the domain's name “Cayron” referring to the crest of the Dentelles. Spanning nearly 17 hectares on 20 different parcels, the Domaine’s vineyards are planted with mostly Grenache and smaller amounts of Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre on a mix of clay, marl and limestones soils, located from 300 to 400 meters above sea level with vines ranging from 40 to over 70 years of age. Employing traditional methods that are “old school all the way” according to Jeb Dunnuck, the Faraud sisters fermented the 2020 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas in subterranean concrete tanks before aging it two years in large, neutral oak foudres dating back more than 50 years, yielding plush, Grenache fruit layered on a backbone of spiced Syrah with the “downright Provençal characters that I absolutely love” according to Jeb Dunnuck, framed by fresh acidity and integrated mineral-tinged tannins on a long, polished finish.

Ranking as one of the highest rated Gigondas of the vintage while remaining a relatively little-known gem, the richly textured 96 pt. 2020 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas is “an unapologetically traditional expression of the appellation” according to critic Raynolds that will captivate fans of bold Southern Rhone reds on the first sip, remarkably bargain priced for collectors to enjoy often over the next decade or more.

Fans of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and anyone seeking a delicious, easy to pour white won’t want to miss the enticing 93 pt. 2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, a perfect balance of fragrant and richly textured citrus and tropical fruit and crisp saline-tinged acidity produced in a region “known for its purity” according to James Suckling and a stunning under $20 value.

With family roots in New Zealand dating back to 1867, the Neylon family were pioneers in aquaculture, building a successful business growing and exporting green lipped mussels before partnering with the Wiffin family to establish an orchard business and later converting the land to vineyards. Planting his initial parcel of commercial vines in the lower Wairau Valley in the early 2000’s, third generation John Neylon released the first vintage of Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc in 2007, expanding vineyard holdings over the next decades to become one of the largest family-owned wineries in New Zealand. Nestled in the heart of the Wairau Plains on the South Island, Rapaura’s sustainably farmed vineyards are planted on well-drained stony soils over crystalline springs fed by melting snow from the peaks of the Southern Alps that eliminate the need for irrigation. Crafting the Reserve to reflect “the diversity of the flavors produced in Marlborough wine,” according to winemaker Mike Bann, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was sourced from top vineyards in the Dillons Point and Wairau sub-regions, lending the 2022 Reserve aromatic notes of ripe passion fruit and a distinct, refreshing minerality. Immediately pressing the grapes after harvest, the succulent 2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was batch fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve its fresh flavors, yielding a precise, clean palate with a bright, persistent finish, a beautifully balanced Kiwi Sauv Blanc summed up by Decanter’s Tina Gellie as “Excellent.”

Named a “Best Buy” by the Wine Enthusiast and delivering outstanding value, the appealing 93 pt. 2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve expresses its pristine origins in the South Island region of Marlborough with pure, ripe fruit flavors balancing pleasing racy acidity, a textbook New Zealand Sauv Blanc bargain priced for anyone seeking a delicious everyday white to fill up the cooler and enjoy often.

A chardonnay with excellent quality for the money with a phenolic tension and mineral and flint undertones. Serious and dry. Try it now. Screw cap.

92 points, James Suckling (Feb 2024)

Broad, generous and buttery, this silky-soft wine is full-bodied, carrying fresh apples, pears and vanilla to a lingering finish. Oak accents like toast and nutmeg dress it up nicely.

Red Schooner by Caymus Voyage 11 (750ml)
Malbec from California
B-21 Top Recommendation

As the first to introduce Caymus to the state of Florida back in 1981, our decades-long relationship with the Wagner Family of Wines presented a terrific opportunity to feature a selection of their outstanding offerings at rock bottom pricing, from the entry level Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 5 to the iconic 2020 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon in limited one-liter bottles, along with Chard, Pinot and the easy-drinking Conundrum blends plus the lush Red Schooner Malbec Voyage 11 and the Red Schooner release called Transit. Here’s what’s in stock and ready to enjoy.

Boasting dark fruit hinting of vanilla and soft tannins, Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 5 blends fruit from a variety of vineyard sites and vintages, its name referring to the “Bonanza” of unheralded vineyards throughout the state (and not the TV Western for those of us over a certain age…), crafted for everyday enjoyment. Inspired by Chuck Wagner’s father and his “no rules” approach to mixing wines, the Conundrum White is a refreshing proprietary blend of a variety of white grapes including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier that boasts lush tropical fruit and crisp acidity, while the Conundrum Red offers rich, dark fruit including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out by pleasant, layered tannins. Sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara to the south up to Solano County in the north, the Sea Sun Chardonnay balances bright, creamy fruit woven with harmonious toasted oak, while the Sea Sun Pinot Noir offers lush, ripe red fruit hinting of forest and spice with a velvet, palate-pleasing texture, its grapes coming from cool climate vineyards along the Pacific. Grown high in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, the ripe Malbec grapes for Red Schooner are shipped via chilled containers to Napa, where the Caymus team crafts a luscious, richly styled Malbec, referred to as Voyage 11 and coming from the 2021 Argentina vintage. Also shipped via chilled containers and crafted by the Caymus winemaking team, the grapes for Red Schooner Transit 2 are mostly Shiraz with a little Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia’s Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, with aging in French oak yielding ripe, dark fruit flavors hinting of spice and mint with smooth, firm tannins.

A comprehensive selection of top-quality wines crafted by the iconic Wagner Family of Wines, this is a not to be missed offer for Caymus fans to mix a case or two, stock up on some everyday wine or select a few favorites – with the legacy of the legendary Caymus behind each label at best on the market pricing, every choice is a win-win.

NV Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Grand Cru (750ml)
Sparkling from Avize, Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted by artisan producer and B-21 favorite Pascal Agrapart in the chalky Cote des Blancs, Champagne Agrapart has enjoyed an under the radar reputation, but with the release of these highly rated 2023 cuvees, that’s about to change. From one of the top grower-producers in the region, these selections from Agrapart offer a rare taste of meticulously crafted, terroir-driven Champagne at a remarkable value that's bound to sell out in a flash.

Now run by the fourth consecutive generation, Agrapart ranks at the top echelons of Champagne, earning a 3-star rating in the Revue de Vin du France alongside only 7 other houses, including Krug. Planted almost entirely with Chardonnay with a few small plots of Pinot Noir, the ten-hectare Agrapart Domaine comprises more than 70 small parcels predominantly in the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oiry, and Oger with a few Premier Cru plots on the Cote de Blancs, boasting low yielding vines averaging over 40 years of age with the oldest over 70 years. Taking the reins of his family’s historic estate in Avize over four decades ago, Pascal works the soils manually while employing organic practices, tilling with horses to ensure his soils do not get compacted (one of his parcels is worked by and named for his horse Venus). Fermenting the base wines exclusively with native yeasts which he believes is critical to expressing the terroir, Pascal employs a mix of older barrels dependent on the cuvee and longer than required bottle aging on the lees, yielding gorgeous, pure fruit impeccably balanced with chalky minerality that finishes long, each cuvee uniquely identified with a different colored plaque (i.e., the round metal disk on top of the cork).

95WI 93WA 93V

Terroirs Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV is an assemblage of four Côte de Blancs Grand Cru cuvées from old vine plantings in Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. This Terroirs is 40% from the 2018 and 2019 vintages and fermented in stainless steel, with 60% reserve wine kept in oak, aged 36 to 40 months on lees and finished with a four gram per liter dosage. Complex and redolent of Meyer lemon curd, crushed stone, butter pastry, almond nougat and honeysuckle, the medium-bodied palate has an electrified, silky acid energy flowing through a richly textured, citrusy mid-palate with a soft chalky grip. Beautifully layered, refreshing and balanced throughout, the finish goes on and on.

95+ points, Sarah Mayo, Wine Independent (Nov 2023)

Based on the 2019 vintage, but with a preponderance of reserve wines from 2018, Agrapart's NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs delivers notes of citrus oil, white flowers, freshly baked bread and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, creamy and satiny palate that's bright, lively and chalky. Wines from Oger dominate the blend.

93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Terroirs Grand Cru is another terrific wine in the lineup this year. Chalk, white pepper, sage and mint meld into a core of lemon peel and crushed rocks. All the elements are so well balanced. An equal blend of 2019 and 2018 juice from 100% Grand Cru sites in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry, the Terroirs saw natural fermentation and 100% malolactic fermentation. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: June, 2023.

2018 Marques de Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Among “the best and most elevated wines in Spain” according to Decanter’s Tim Atkin, the elegant 94 pt. 2018 Marques de Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva offers fresh, aromatic juicy fruit hinting of vanilla and earthy spice with bright acidity and supple, harmonious tannins, a superb value that fans of classically styled Rioja will want to scoop up.

Among Rioja’s most historic bodegas, Marques de Murrieta was founded in 1852, its impressive 150-year-old stone Ygay castle located at the end of a long drive surrounded by lawns and cypress trees southeast of the Rioja Alta towns of Haro and Elciego. Remaining in the Murrieta family for over a century until its purchase by Vicente Cebrian in 1983, Murrieta’s quality has soared over the last two decades under the direction of second-generation Vicente Dalmau Cebrian-Sagarriga, the wines produced in a massive new state of the art winery by long-term winemaker Maria Vargas beginning in 2018. One of the few wineries in the region sourcing their Rioja from all estate grown fruit, Murrieta’s 300-hectare Ygay vineyard (pronounced “E-guy”) is located on the southerly limit of Rioja Alta between 320 meters to 485 meters above sea level, its diverse range of soils, exposures and altitudes reflected in the Reserva’s rich complexity. Blending mostly Tempranillo with small amounts of Graziano, Mazuelo and Garnacha, winemaker Vargas aged the refined 2018 Marques de Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva for 21 months in a mix of new and used American oak barrels and a year and a half in bottle, yielding bright fresh flavors with supple, silky tannins and a long-lasting finish, described as “effortlessly drinkable” by James Suckling and built for years of pleasurable drinking ahead.

Describing Murrieta as “one of the most classical names in Rioja” producing “eminently age-worthy reds,” the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez sums up the lush and enticing 94 pt. 2018 Marques de Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva as “superb,” an expertly crafted Rioja built for years of enjoyment and ranking among Rioja’s finest values.

94WA 94JS

The flagship red 2018 Rioja Reserva was produced with a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 4% Mazuelo (a.k.a. Cariñena) and 2% Garnacha selected from their 300 hectares of vineyards that exemplifies the character of the vintage and the place. 2018 was a year with good rain and a cool season that resulted in a late harvest, which started on October 1 and was slow and delivered grapes with good freshness. Each variety and plot fermented separately in stainless steel. and the wines aged separately in American oak barrels for 21 months and then settled in concrete until bottling. It follows the path of the 2016, where I noticed a change that is taken further in this, controlling the power and increasing the freshness. It's very aromatic, a year completely different from the 2017; it has less structure and more freshness and subtler balance and enough oomph, concentration and power neatly compensated by freshness. I believe 2018 was a very good vintage to implement this change. It's perfumed, fresh, elegant and medium-bodied, with a velvety texture. Superb! 960,000 bottles produced.

94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

Savory cured-meat, tobacco and grilled-spice notes to the bright plum, red-date, cherry and green-olive aromas. Quite a juicy, medium-bodied Rioja with fresh and extremely silky tannins caressing the zesty orange and crunchy red-berry flavors. Nuanced, fluid and effortlessly drinkable. Long and extremely elegant. A vintage that highlights layering and freshness, rather than power and depth. 86% tempranillo, 8% graciano, 4% mazuelo and 2% garnacha. Delicious now, but will hold well.

From “unquestionably a great vintage for Bordeaux” according to Jeb Dunnuck with “a huge swath of beautiful wines,” the 92 pt. 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou offers “plenty of fruit, texture, and pleasure” according to Dunnuck, while the 93 pt. 2019 Belle-Vue is “rock star stuff readers should snatch up,” summing it up as “a gorgeous bottle of wine that will keep for over a decade.” From a dry hot year producing “rich and lush wines,” Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson describes the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau LaTour Martillac Rouge as boasting “beautiful depth” and “real complexity,” while the 94 pt. 2019 Chateau Chauvin from St. Emilion is “well balanced, with rich seams of dark blackberry and bilberry fruits” and the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Lagrange is “richly textured and intense” and easily one of the estate’s best vintages. According to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the 2019’s offer “striking aromatic range with notable intensity and persistence of flavor,” describing the 97 pt. 2019 Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere as “full-bodied, ample and layered,” while the “hedonistic” 99 pt. 2019 Chateau Valandraud 99 pt. is “impressively vibrant and charming” with a “lavish core of fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins,” both promising to perform well over the next 20 years.

I loved the 2019 Château Latour-Martillac, and I under-rated it from barrel. Revealing a dense ruby/plum color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherry, smoked tobacco, gravely earth, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, supple tannins, and one heck of a finish. It's beautifully done and will cruise for 25+ years in cold cellars. It needs plenty of air if drinking any time soon.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Sweet berry, spice, tobacco and dried rose-petal aromas. Full-bodied with beautifully integrated tannins and a creamy, polished texture. Refined and complex. One of the best young bottles ever from here. Better after 2025.

95 points, James Suckling (Mar 2022)

Beautiful depth to the flavours here, this is just gorgeous, so bright and precise, with cassis, blackberry, bilberry, raspberry, a real array of fruit flavours, textures and acidity levels combining to give real complexity. 40% new oak, harvest September 19 to October 11. Great freshness and juice on the finish; this is a superlative Latour Martillac.

Frank Family Vineyards has earned a loyal following for their consistently outstanding wines priced well below their fellow Napa competitors and these Napa Valley selections are no exception, a spectrum of ready to enjoy wines from outstanding California vintages, ranging from their elegant Carneros Chardonnay to a top scoring Napa Cab described as “superb” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and all delivering exceptional value.

Located near a crossroad connecting Highway 128 to the Silverado Trail, Frank Family Vineyards occupies a historic stone building built in 1884 that housed the original Larkmead Winery, the landmark property acquired by former Disney executive Rich Frank and legendary Napa winemaker Koerner Rombauer in the 1990’s. After purchasing a home on the hills overlooking Rutherford with a small vineyard, Rich Frank partnered with his friend Rombauer to produce wine at the facility, but after a catastrophic fire spared only the historic building in 2000, Rich became the sole owner and rebuilt the damaged portion of the winery, renaming it Frank Family Vineyards. Sourced from 380 acres of estate vineyards in Carneros, Rutherford, and Capell Valley, long time winemaker and GM Todd Graff employs the same barrel aging across the Napa Collection, utilizing a mix of one-third new French oak barrels with one-third in once-used barrels and one-third in twice-used barrels. Sourced from cooler climate vineyards in Carneros, the luscious 2022 Frank Family Vineyard Chardonnay balances rich fragrant fruit and a creamy texture from lees stirring with bright acidity, while the richly aromatic 2022 Frank Family Pinot Noir reveals fresh, juicy fruit hinting of earthy spice with vibrant acidity on a satiny finish. The rich 2021 Frank Family Vineyard Zinfandel offers ripe dark bramble fruit layered with pepper and spice from estate vineyards in Capell Valley and Rutherford while the smooth and satisfying 93 pt. 2021 Frank Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon boasts “moderate to full tannins around a mix of bright red cherries, black cherries, mint and cassis” according to James Suckling with well-integrated tannins that promise a decade of longevity.

2018 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine (500ml)
Muscat from Constantia, South Africa
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Produced from the historic South African estate of Klein Constantia, no description seems to come close to accurately portraying the ethereal, otherworldly experience of tasting the one-of-a-kind Vin de Constance. With Decanter declaring "Vin de Constance, one of the world’s most legendary sweet wines, has entered a new chapter of its centuries old existence with the 2012 vintage," this limited offering is a rare opportunity to secure an allocation of multiple vintages over the last decade of the world's leading late harvest Muscat wine beginning with the extraordinary 2012, available in the estate's distinctive 500ml and 1.5L bottles at an equally exceptional price.

Founded in 1684 in the valley north of False Bay and just south of Cape Town, Klein Constantia was first planted by Simon Van der Stel (founder of Stellenbosch), who recognized that the region's decomposed granite soils and cooling maritime breezes were ideal for growing grapes. By the mid-1700s, the Vin de Constance had attracted a fan base that would come to include George Washington, Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria, with author Jane Austen immortalizing its "healing powers" and the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte requesting only a single glass of Vin de Constance on his deathbed. But economic upheavals paired with the decimation of the vineyards by phylloxera in the late 1800s sent Constantia into decline for more than a century, until a portion of the historic original estate was revived in 1986. With the estate's change in ownership in 2010, a modern renaissance has begun, and as Vinous critic Neal Martin declared, Klein Constantia "is undergoing a quiet revolution." Now led by managing director Hans Astrom, formerly at Hess Collection and winemaker Matt Day, whose experience includes Elderton in Barossa Valley, Dancing Hares in Napa, and St. Emilon's Chateau Belefont Belcier, the Vin de Constance is sourced from the estate's 16 hectares of Muscat de Frontignan grapes. Produced without botrytis, Day achieves optimal ripeness by requiring up to 30 passes through the vineyard over the course of the two-month harvest, with the first batches picked to preserve their bright acidity and fermented to dryness for a base wine, while the last grapes are harvested by a special team as individual raisins that have dehydrated on the vine, concentrating sugars. Meticulously blended over time to achieve an integrated balance of sugar, alcohol and acidity, the Vin de Constance is vinified in Klein Constantia's new custom-built cellar with Day limiting the time spent in barrel to three years to enhance freshness, utilizing a mix of new and used French oak, acacia barrels and large format foudres.

Showing amazing consistency yet constantly evolving vintage after vintage, the Vin de Constance is an intense, energetic wine boasting a long and immensely complex finish, balancing inseparable multiple layers of elegant, honeyed sweetness with harmonious acidity. Standing among the greatest sweet wines of the world and continuing to evolve over the next decades, this is an extraordinary opportunity to secure the seductive Vin de Constance at an exceptional price, with multiple vintages offered in a distinctively shaped bottle resembling the original hand-blown design, one that is as unique as the wine itself.

98JS #98 Top 100 98JA

Extraordinary aromas of white peaches, apricots, vanilla and flowers. Full-bodied and very sweet with so much sweet and dried fruit, such as apricots and tangerines, yet it maintains citrusy freshness and texture, with a long, very sweet finish. Always energetic and vivid. Great length to this. Goes on for minutes. It’s a sweet wine to drink when young, to marvel over the intensity and verve, yet also one to age for decades. Drink or hold.

98 points, James Suckling (Sep 2021)

#98 - James Suckling Top 100 of 2021

The most gorgeous mix of straw, powerful citrus, apricot, fresh juicy white pear and peach, tons of stone fruits and spice, graphite and smoke. As ever this is both subtle and overpowering, managing push and pull and so so good - both lusciously sweet and a breath of fresh air running through your palate. As I say every time I drink Vin de Constance, if every sweet wine tasted like this, there would be no sales crisis in the category. Drink now, or allow the flavours to deepen further over the next decade.

The 2016 Vin de Constance is matured in 50% French acacia oak, Hungarian oak and regular French oak, and 50% in French foudres. This has more delineation and precision on the nose compared to the previous vintage, offering acacia honey, quince, saffron and touches of elderflower in the background. The palate is very well balanced with fine precision, a killer line of acidity and disarming purity toward a finish that lingers in the mouth. Stunning.

Located off the Silverado Trail, the Stags’ Leap Winery is among the oldest growers in the Stags Leap District, the 240-acre property continuously planted with vines since the late 1800’s. Purchased by Carl Doumani and his wife Joanne in 1970, the abandoned estate underwent a lengthy renovation which included the complete restoration of the original buildings and vineyards, the revitalized winery eventually becoming part of Treasury Wine Estates in 2011. Sourced from AVA’s in southern Napa Valley that enjoy the cooling effects of San Pablo Bay, the 93 pt. 2022 Stags’ Leap Winery Chardonnay offers crisp apple notes and distinct minerality with a hint of rich, tropical fruit, its aging in only 25% new French oak yielding a creamy texture and a refreshing, citrusy finish. Sourced primarily from the Gamble Ranch vineyard in the Oakville AVA, the full-flavored 92 pt. 2022 Stags' Leap Winery Sauvignon Blanc reveals aromatic bright fruit with flinty minerality and subtle notes of brioche from partial oak aging, showing “impressive freshness” according to James Suckling on a racy, tangy finish. Aged for 15 months in 19% new American oak, the 93 pt. 2019 Stags' Leap Winery Petite Sirah offers intensely aromatic ripe spiced fruit, the Petite Sirah comes from a diverse range of vineyards including Coombsville and Oakville and Calistoga and St. Helena to the north and blended with small amounts of mixed Rhone varietals to add to its rich complexity. A deep, brawny character in this full-bodied wine is nicely tempered by polished tannins and complex flavors. Aromas of toasted oak, blackberries and grilled sage lead to blackberry, blueberry and black olive flavors that are shaded by cocoa, espresso and sage notes. Best from 2028-2040.

2017 Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

“Don’t make the mistake of missing out on some of the magic that the 2017 vintage has created.”

Eric Guido, Vinous

Producing consistently outstanding Brunello year in and year out, the elegant 95 pt. 2017 Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino is another winning release from one of the region’s most esteemed producers, boasting fragrant aromas and fleshy, ripe fruit with velvety tannins and a persistent finish, described as “just crazy enjoyable” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson for Brunello fans to enjoy over the next decade or more at an easy to reach for price.

Dominated by an ancient 12th century castle, the historic Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo estate was among the first to produce Brunello di Montalcino over two centuries ago, the massive 235 hectare property situated in the rolling hills southwest of Montalcino. Spanning 151 hectares in the Brunello DOCG, the vineyards are located at altitudes from 250 to 450 meters surrounded by dense forests and planted in a mix of soils containing clay, limestone and sandstone. Vinifying each unique parcel separately with only about half of the 100 plus parcels making the final cut for the Brunello, winemaker Filippo Manni aged the 2017 Castelgiocondo Brunello for 2 years in Slavonian oak casks, then 2 years in French oak barriques and 4 months in bottle, yielding energetic spiced fruit with stony minerality and balanced acidity structured to age.

A beautifully harmonious Brunello described as “totally captivating” by Decanter’s Georgina Hindle, the impressive 95 pt. 2017 Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino offers a rare combination of quality and value, an exceptional Brunello worthy of laying down by the case that’s unbeatably priced to enjoy often over the coming years.

The minute you hover your nose over the gunsmoke, soy and dried roses aromatics of this glass you know how good it is, just crazy enjoyable. Brilliant quality, liqourice, tobacco, soft leather, and raspberry jam. Signature Brunello. Adored it last year, and it is holding the line even in a less celebrated vintage. One of the original producers of Brunello in the 1800s, with vineyards planted between 250-400m in altitude. Fermentation in stainless steel, ageing in barrels then bottles for a total of five years.

95 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2022)

Supple and generous in terms of acidity, crushed velvet-textured tannins and herbal-edged red berry fruit - mouth filling and lively. This has character and definition, so youthful still, with tannins on the ripe, grippy side but there is nice underlying spice and touches of bitter orange peel, cinnamon and toasted cedar alongside more delicate rose and violet floral elements all of which come in waves presenting themselves one after the other building to a harmonious and characterful crescendo on the finish. Structured and persistent with depth and lasting power. Totally captivating.

95 points, Decanter

The Frescobaldi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino CastelGiocondo is one of those wines that has seen slight tweaks and stylistic changes over the past 10 years, going from an abundant, large-scale generic Tuscan red to a more subdued and authentic interpretation of the cool Montalcino territory. I'd say that the transition has been smooth and not obvious, unless you were especially attentive. Despite the hot-vintage character of this sample, the wine freely dispenses of wild berry, crushed stone and red rose aromas. This is an ambitious production of 300,000 bottles.

Dark-cherry and walnut aromas with some dried flowers . Cedar comes through as well. It’s full-bodied with round, juicy tannins. Needs some time to soften. Better after 2023.

Describing the 2019 vintage as producing “powerful wines” showcasing Bordeaux’s diverse terroirs, the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth sums up the 2019 reds as offering “ripe, lush and velvety-textured fruit” with both the Left and Right Banks delivering outstanding value, these top rated selections showing 2019’s hallmark “harmony, balance and freshness” according to James Suckling and delivering the winning combination of approachability and longevity at an unbeatable price.

Currant, berry and tobacco aromas and flavors with some thyme and coffee bean. Full-bodied, chewy and polished. Needs time to soften. Try after 2024.

92 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Sénéjac is a complex, beguiling Haut-Médoc. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice, dried herbs, menthol, dried flowers and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that lift from the glass. Sénéjac offers unreal complexity and tons of energy that continues to build through to a long, beautifully persistent finish laced with expressive savory top notes.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Vinified by Château Talbot's Jean-Michel Laporte, the 2019 Sénéjac delivers aromas of smoky blackberries, pencil shavings and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and charming palate framed by fine tannins and concluding with a saline, mouthwatering finish. It's a fine effort that comes recommended.

This garnet-colored wine has a bouquet of black currant, purple plums and saddle leather. It is juicy in the mouth, offering flavors of black-cherry, pomegranate, milk chocolate, fennel and orange blossom. Velvety tannins fade into a Valencia orange and violet splashed finish.

2022 Flowers Rose (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From the pioneering producers of cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the rugged Sonoma Coast, these elegantly crafted selections from Flowers Vineyard and Winery express their high-altitude vineyard origins in the Western Sonoma Coast AVA with bright, fresh flavors and vibrant acidity, all “impeccably made and high quality” according to Jeb Dunnuck and bargain priced for stocking up by the dozen.

Among the first to recognize the potential for growing grapes high on the rugged Sonoma Coast, founders Joan and Walt Flowers planted their first vineyard in 1990 and established Flowers Vineyard and Winery in 1998, their success with cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir attracting an influx of elite winemakers including Martinelli, Pahlmeyer, Peter Michael and Williams Selyem over the next decades. Since forging a partnership with the Flowers in 2009, Quintessa owner Augustin Huneeus has continuously upgraded the vineyards and winemaking at the estate, hiring top Burgundy winemaker and consultant Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac in 2016 to work alongside winemaker Chantal Forthum and “helping to set a new standard for quality” in the region according to the Wine Spectator’s Kim Marcus. Sourced from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Sonoma Coast vineyards including Flowers’ organically farmed Sea View Ridge, the fresh and vibrant 2022 Flowers Rose was aged in 90% stainless steel and 10% neutral French oak, its bright red berry aromas complemented by flavors of citrus and watermelon with vibrant acidity on a refreshing finish. Blending Chardonnay from Camp Meeting and other coastal vineyards in a style described by Jeb Dunnuck as “classic, elegant Sonoma Coast,” the 2022 Flowers Chardonnay was aged in 18% new French oak for 10 months, yielding pure, bright fruit flavors with a creamy texture, lithe minerality and well-balanced acidity. Produced in a year described as “a benchmark vintage for California Pinot” by the Wine Spectator, the elegant 93 pt. 2021 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was sourced from select family-owned vineyards on the Sonoma Coast as well as the Flower’s Sea View Ridge, revealing enticing red fruit layered with earthy spice and vibrant acidity and earning the #68 spot on the recently released Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023.

Continuing the estate’s “upwards shift in quality” according to the Wine Independent's Lisa Perrotti-Brown through a vineyard-driven approach, these Flower Vineyards and Winery selections are crafted to reveal precise fruit flavors and mineral-driven acidity unique to the remote, high-altitude vineyards of the Sonoma Coast, a standout value for fans of California cool climate wines at a price that makes them easy to reach for again and again.

2016 Chateau Branaire-Ducru (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Ranked #16 on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2019 and “not to be missed” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the rich and refined 95 pt. 2016 Chateau Branaire-Ducru boasts fresh, aromatic and juicy black fruit with graceful, supple tannins on an uplifted mineral finish, one of the top rated and top value blends from St. Julien in the outstanding 2016 vintage delivered ex-Chateau to enjoy over the next few decades.

Situated below the town of Beychevelle in the southern end of St. Julien, Branaire-Ducru’s massive stone gates open to a tree-lined driveway leading to the 17th century Grand Chateau, surrounded by centuries’ old vineyards once part of neighboring Chateau Beychevelle’s holdings dating back to 1680. Building a reputation for consistent quality since its purchase by Patrick Maroteaux in 1988, Branaire-Ducru has been reaping the long-term rewards of the replanting program and drastic yield reduction implemented by then winemaker Philippe Dhalluin who moved to Mouton Rothschild, the Grand Vin crafted by winemaker Jean-Dominique Videau for the past two decades. Spread out across the St. Julien appellation among Super Second powerhouses Ducru-Beaucaillou and Leoville Barton, Branaire’s 60 hectares of vines include a 3.5 hectare parcel less than a kilometer from the moderating influence of the Garonne river, as well as plots to the west near Chateaux Lagrange and Talbot, divided into 15 different micro-terroirs depending on the composition of soil and planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cab Franc. Blending 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, winemaker Videau and consultant Eric Boissenot aged the 2016 Branaire-Ducru for 18 months in 60% new French oak and 40% second use, adding to complexity by increasing the amount of press wine in the final blend and yielding “arguably the most polished of the St. Juliens” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, meticulously balancing plush, concentrated fruit with integrated acidity, its dense, ripe tannins and lingering, precise finish promising a long-lived and pleasurable evolution to come.

Described by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson as “a supremely elegant, measured take on St-Julien that delivers in spades,” the luxurious 95 pt. 2016 Branaire-Ducru is “one of the highlights of 2016” according to critic Antonio Galloni, summing it up as “gorgeous,” a bargain priced beauty punching well above its weight for Bordeaux lovers and collectors to pull the cork without hesitation.

95WE 95JS 94WA 94WI 93V

The estate, at the southern end of Saint-Julien, has produced a wine that is both structured and stylish. This bold, ripe wine shows opulent black fruits and generous tannins. Juicy and structured, it has good aging potential. Drink from 2025.

95 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

The best vintage of this wine since 2009! Effusive, fresh redcurrant and cassis aromas give this St.-Julien terrific drive and energy, the elegant, dry tannins beautifully married to the medium body, right through the long, agile finish. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Branaire-Ducru is a real classic, and in the fullness of time, it will likely rival or even surpass the more charming, demonstrative 2019. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of dark berries, cassis, loamy soil, pencil shavings and cigar smoke, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a taut, structured profile and a long, penetrating finish. The only missing ingredient here is time.

94+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)

The 2016 Branaire-Ducru is deep garnet colored. It jumps with notes of ripe, juicy blackberries and blackcurrants, followed by hints of lilacs and kirsch plus a touch of underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is laden with juicy black fruits, supported by soft tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a mineral lift.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

The 2016 Branaire-Ducru is powerful, dense and explosive to a degree that is surprising for a wine that is typically much more sensual. There is lovely definition throughout, but readers will have to be patient to catch the 2016 at its very best. Hints of leather, smoke, tobacco and dried flowers begin to open up in the glass, but the 2016 is quite reticent at this stage. In two tastings I found the 2016 unusually closed. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what time brings.

2022 Stolpman Vineyards La Cuadrilla Ballard Canyon (750ml)
Syrah from Santa Barbara, California

Consistently garnering 90 plus pt. ratings and called “an amazing value” by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the bright and juicy 93 pt. 2022 Stolpman Vineyards La Cuadrilla offers luscious, layered fruit hinting of earthy spice with smooth, supple tannins, a delicious, top-scoring red blend from one of the Central’s Coast’s pioneering producers bargain priced to enjoy often over the next few years.

Searching for limestone-rich soils near the Pacific Ocean, founder Tom Stolpman was among the first to cultivate wine grapes in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley on California’s Central Coast, planting his initial vines in what is now the Ballard County AVA nearly 50 years ago and establishing Stolpman Vineyards in 1990. Spanning 153 acres and now under the direction of Tom’s son Peter, Stolpman’s sustainably farmed vineyards are situated on three distinct limestone ridges, sustainably farmed without irrigation under the direction of legendary vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano and his full-time vineyard crew known as “La Cuadrilla.” Originally established as a training opportunity for vineyard workers to manage a small block (or “cuadra” in Spanish) and give them stable, year-round employment, the La Cuadrilla blend has grown to over 10% of the estate’s total production, the profits used by Stolpman to reward their dedicated full-time vineyard crew with weekly and year-end bonuses. Blending 60% Syrah with 30% Grenache and small amounts of Mourvedre and Sangiovese from estate vineyards and Ruben’s parcels throughout the County, winemaker Kyle Knapp aged the 2022 Stolpman Vineyards La Cuadrilla in large 100% neutral French oak casks for 6 months, preserving its appealing fresh red fruit flavors and bright acidity with satiny, fine-grained tannins on a savory, polished finish.

Crafted “with notable freshness and verve” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the appealing 93 pt. 2022 Stolpman Vineyards La Cuadrilla boasts easy drinkability in a bold, lush style that makes it an outstanding choice for an everyday pour, its value pricing part of the Stolpman legacy of over delivering value for savvy wine lovers seeking a great deal.

93WA 92V

The 2022 La Cuadrilla is a blend of Syrah and Grenache with a smaller portion of Mourvèdre. It offers slowly unfurling scents of wild berries, tar, turned earth and wildflowers. The medium-bodied palate is bright and silky, with spicy, earthy fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 10,500 cases were made, and profits go to the vineyard workers at Stolpman.

93 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

The 2022 La Cuadrilla is a fabulous entry-level wine. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, spice, tobacco and cedar give this light-bodied wine lovely aromatic presence. All the elements are very nicely balanced. The 25% stems are present, but not overpowering.

2015 Vina Sena Sena (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Aconcagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Eduardo Chadwick is one of the most important people of the vine in Chile – the world for that matter – facing multiple obstacles throughout his impressive career. For nearly a decade Eduardo worked to rebuild the iconic Viña Errázuriz, restoring his family's 19th century estate to its former glory. As Eduardo was gaining ground, California's most famous man of the vine paid the country a visit in 1990. Robert Mondavi fell in love with Chile and would soon be introduced to his counterpart in the region. By 1995, the two had reached a pioneering agreement – Seña was born. For four long, grueling years the two passionate visionaries toiled over vineyard sites in search of the perfect terroir for their dream wine. This was to be Chile's icon above all others. Site was paramount.

Located in the Valle de Aconcagua, on a 42 hectare colluvial vineyard of well drained gravel, rock and loam, the Seña vineyard is planted to the perfect mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The slightly cooler temperatures of this elevated, sloping site allow for long, slow ripening. The Seña vineyard is often harvested two weeks after its nearest neighbor. Precious few wines in the country will compete; perhaps none – after all, perfection is incredibly rare.

This is a wine above all others ever bottled in Chile. A wine which is rightly described by Neal Martin as "The peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

Stunning aromas of blackcurrant, stone, blueberry and licorice. Also iodine. Floral. Perfumed. Full body, fantastic density of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate with such energy and focus. Touch of chewiness on the finish. A complex and complete wine that delivers a generosity with firmness. Drink in 2021 but already a classic to drink.

Sharing the exceptional terroir of Pessac-Leognan’s most prestigious estates including First Growth Haut-Brion, here’s an exciting opportunity for Bordeaux lovers and collectors to acquire top vintages of Chateau LaTour Martillac’s powerful, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Grand Vin Rouge and a top vintage of the LaTour Martillac Blanc delivered in perfect provenance, some ready to enjoy and all built for decades of aging at unbeatable bargain pricing.

Owned and managed by the Kressman family since the 1930’s, Chateau LaTour Martillac is named for its iconic tower in the main courtyard, a remnant of a fort built in the 12th century to defend the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse near the village of Martillac. Located southeast of the small Left Bank town of Leognan, the sustainably farmed vineyards for the Rouge span 45 hectares of vines averaging 25 years of age while the 10 hectares for the Blanc are planted mostly to Sauvignon Blanc with some Semillon vines over 140 years of age. A superb dry white Bordeaux blend, the crisp and enticing 94 pt. 2021 Chateau LaTour Martillac Blanc is mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a third Semillon, “a gorgeous white” according to Jeb Dunnuck that’s built to evolve over the next decade. Moving to the reds, the 95 pt. 2020 Chateau LaTour Martillac Rouge is described as “quintessentially Pessac-Leognan” by Neal Martin Vinous with nuances of flinty minerality and “a bright future ahead,” while the 96 pt. 2019 LaTour Martillac Rouge is a “superlative LaTour Martillac” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson with “beautiful depth to the flavors,” declared “one of the best young bottles ever” from the estate by James Suckling. “Laden with juicy fruit and savory layers” according to the Wine Advocate, Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 95 pt. 2018 LaTour Martillac Rouge “unusually sumptuous” and the 94 pt. 2016 LaTour Martillac Rouge offers fresh concentrated dark fruit with precise acidity and a “gutsy finish” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth. Jane Anson of Inside Bordeaux describes the 95 pt. 2015 Chateau LaTour Martillac Rouge as “powerful, finessed and deeply textured” while the 94 pt. 2009 Chateau Latour Martillac Rouge that’s “meant for aging” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss is now ready to enjoy over the next few decades, among the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2012.

Garnering exceptional ratings vintage over vintage, Chateau Latour-Martillac is a standout value among its higher profile Pessac-Leognan peers, these top-rated selections remarkably priced for Bordeaux lovers to pull the cork without hesitation and enjoy their lengthy evolution over the coming decades.

95JA 94JS 93WA 93V 93WE 93WI

A superb vintage all over Bordeaux, and absolutely one that you should be searching out with the Crus Classés de Graves. You can wait for this to soften for sure, because the tannins are pretty racy right now, squaring up to the blackcurrant and blackberry fruit rather than cradling it, but there is such a charm to its confidence that I am pretty tempted to say go for it now with a few hours in a carafe. Liqourice, cocoa beans, crème de cassis, espresso and a ton of brambled autumnal fruits. 40% new oak

95 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2022)

This is very perfumed with blackberry and blueberry aromas, but shows a hot-stone and blanched-almond undertone. Medium-to full-bodied with tight and silky tannins that are extremely polished and beautiful. Love the length and balance to this. Try after 2022.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Latour Martillac is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with warm plums, kirsch and redcurrant jelly on the nose with touches of bay leaves, iron ore and black soil. Medium-bodied with a well-sustained mid-palate of muscular fruit, it has a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing very long.

93 points, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Latour-Martillac offers classic Pessac-Léognan scents on the nose: black fruit, black olive and a touch of sage, plus hints of blue fruit that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine acidity. A little compact toward the finish, but with good persistence. My feeling is that this will close down quite soon after bottling, but there is a great wine here.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2019)

A structured wine backed by plenty of black-currant fruits, this is initially austere. Its richness needs time to develop and turn into the classically structured wine that this estate does so well. Drink from 2025.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

The 2016 Latour-Martillac is deep garnet in color. It flies out of the glass with energetic notes of crushed red and black currants, warm plums, and pencil lead, plus hints of black olives and truffles. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly wound with red and black fruit layers intertwined with mineral sparks, framed by grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with great length.

2020 Tolaini Al Passo (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A terrific choice for an everyday Italian red, Super Tuscan fans and anyone seeking outstanding bang for the buck will want to stock up on the 92 pt. 2020 Tolaini Al Passo, offering ripe spiced fruit and savory acidity with a lush, long finish, sourced from an outstanding 2020 vintage producing “rich, sumptuous wines” according to critic Antonio Galloni and the rare Super Tuscan that’s also a super bargain.

After 40 years of running a successful business in Canada, entrepreneur Pier Luigi Tolaini returned to his native Tuscany with the goal of producing top quality wines from Sangiovese, purchasing 25 hectares in the hills of the Castelnuovo Berardenga region of Chianti planted haphazardly with vines among olive trees and establishing Tolaini in 1998. Undertaking massive replanting of the vines and rebalancing of the soils, Pier hired famed enologist Michel Rolland and Tuscan agronomist Andrea Paoletti to manage the vineyards and construct a state-of-the-art winery, releasing the first Al Passo in 2007 and expanding the estate to over 100 hectares over the next decade. Now under the ownership and management of his daughter Lia, also the founder of Manhattan-based importer Banville Wine Merchants, Tolaini’s 65 hectares of organically certified vineyards are planted mostly to Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in silty clay soils rich in limestone, surrounded by a biodiverse array of vineyards, forests and olive groves. Fermented in a mix of stainless and French oak, winemaker Francesco Rosi blended nearly even parts Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for the 2020 Tolaini Al Passo, spending a total of 14 months in French oak fermenters and barriques and another 12 months in bottle unfiltered, yielding a “powerful deep wine” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous with rich fruit and harmonious tannins promising a decade of enjoyment.

Called “one of the most improved wineries in Chianti Classico over these last few years,” by Antonio Galloni, the fresh and vibrant 92 pt. 2020 Tolaini Al Passo offers the appealing combination of affordable and delicious, a beautifully crafted Super Tuscan blend that’s value priced to pick up by the case.

The 2020 Al Passo is a powerful, deep wine. A blast of dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, dried herbs, leather and menthol makes a strong opening statement. This heady, internationally-styled wine has a lot going on. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. The Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend works especially well.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

Savory and spicy nose with some sweet spices over the berry and citrus fruit. Expressive and fine-grained on the palate with a firm backbone and a tight, lengthy finish. Unfiltered. Drink now.

92 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

A blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2020 Al Passo offers soft lines and lots of rich fruit with black cherry, blackberry and light spice. This vintage does not have the clarity or precision of a cooler vintage, but it does offer good volume and upfront intensity. Production is 110,000 bottles.

91 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

A rich style, this red boasts ripe cherry, blackberry, black currant, wild herb and spice flavors aligned with a supple texture. Fresh and tangy, with a long, resonant finish. Harmonious, this is accessible now with decanting or aeration, but no rush. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2028. 11,000 cases made, 7,000 cases imported.

2010 Chateau Pontet-Canet (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Alfred Tesseron and his team, led by estate manager Jean-Michel Comme, have completely transformed both the vineyards and identity of Château Pontet-Canet by embracing organic and biodynamic practices. Recognizing the extraordinary terroir of Pontet Canet – the heart lies in a plateau outcropping of Garonne Gunz gravel which overlays limestone bedrock, these poor soils allow drainage that’s optimal for Cabernet. The center of this plateau is planted to Cabernet Franc which is surrounded by Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot is planted on the gravelly clay soils that meet the perimeter of the gravel plateau. Tesseron's campaign for biodynamic agriculture began in 2004 and tasting results confirmed this to be the estate's future; the Medoc's first Classified Growth dedicated to biodynamics. Pontet Canet received its organic certification in 2010 and Demeter in 2014 – the world's largest certification organization for biodynamic agriculture used in 50 countries. Three Breton draft horses were added to the estate's stable replacing tractors in 2008, now at total of seven horses tend the vineyards. With great terroir and extraordinary dedication to excellence, Tesseron has elevated Pontet Canet beyond its historic performance; now among the top estates in Bordeaux.

The 2010 Pontet-Canet offers a very deep garnet color. Whoa—the nose explodes with a vast array of black fruit preserves and savory nuances: plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial, black cherry coulis and licorice with wafts of dried lavender, melted chocolate, charcuterie, black olives, truffles and camphor plus a hint of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is completely filled with black fruits, exotic spices and earthy nuances with a firm foundation of ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. So much more expressive and seductive than a lot of 2010s at this stage, and yet it is still incredibly youthful!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (May 2020)

The aromas to this are incredible with blueberry, minerals, dried flowers, and stones. It goes to dried meat and spices. Full body and incredibly integrated with blackberry, licorice, and minerals. There's a wonderful purity to this. It goes on for minutes. The quality of tannins is amazing. Seamless. There's an amazing transparency that shows you all the elements of the wine's unique terrior. Try after 2018.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2013)

The 2010 Pontet-Canet lags behind the 2009, but these two vintages can be hard to compare due the drastically different styles. Where the 2009 is broad, expansive, and showy, the 2010 starts our more reserved and classic in style, with beautiful notes of cassis, cedarwood, lead pencil shavings, tobacco, and damp earth all developing with air. Deep, beautifully concentrated, full-bodied, and powerful, it’s built for the long haul and needs 5-7 years of bottle age, but I suspect will see its 50th birthday in still fine drinking form.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2018)

Dense, yes, but this is also a handsome wine that balances complex tannins with pure black currant fruits that shine. This biodynamic wine has a generous, full and rich feel, ripe with just a touch of restraint. The greatness of the wine shows in its purity with a deceptive simplicity that hides the final complex tannins and structure.
