Ripe and intense aromas of strawberries and blackberries with hints of black ink. Savory notes, too. Full-bodied, chewy and focused with linear fruit and character. Very finely crafted. Drink or hold.

Earning its highest marks since the lauded 2004s – but with greater underlying complexity, combined with better raw materials – 2010 is unquestionably the greatest vintage for Rioja recorded in a decade. It's no secret. Tasting dozens of the region's best examples during my July tour of the top producers was further proof. La Rioja Alta was at the top of their game, the 2010 Viña Alberdi flat out exceptional; candidate for all around greatest Rioja value to ever cross my palate. Combining a host of red fruits, floral components and laser-like precision, this recalls Riojas costing 3 times the price. I was – quite frankly – blown away.
