“Alfredo Currado was a visionary in so many ways, it almost boggles the mind to think of all of areas in which he was a pioneer. Currado and the Vietti family were among the first producers to recognize the value of owning their vineyards. In 1961 Currado was one the first growers to release single-vineyard Barolos and Barbarescos, with his Rocche and Masseria bottlings. Later that decade he virtually single handedly resurrected the nearly-extinct white Arneis, today a DOCG wine that has brought enormous riches to so many of his fellow growers and producers.”

Vietti and Bruno Giacosa are considered the best producers of Roero Arneis. Having tasted both in Italy in April I can attest that both are very fine but I prefer the Vietti and it costs 1/3 less. Pale sunshine yellow color with fresh floral, citrus and melon aromas with hints
of almonds. An unoaked, dry, medium bodied white wine
with crisp acidity, the Arneis is a well-balanced, elegant wine with good complexity and a lingering finish. 90 points, Steve Rayman
The 2009 Arneis is a pretty, fresh white laced with apples, pears, flowers and mint. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2011. 88 points, Antonio Galloni for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #190 (AUG 2010) |
