The Raveneau 2008 Chablis La Foret – like his village wine, from young vines – displays a vintage-typical aromatic medley of iris, grapefruit, sage, green tea, white currant, and crushed stone. (Here, the exuberant 6 month old wine’s nose reminded me of Sancerre.) Firm in feel, palpably extract-rich and persistently bright, this cuvee’s fresh citrus, herbs, and lingering stoniness provided a rather 2007-like sense of cool restraint that contrasts with the sheer forwardness of its aromas. I suspect that it will reward those with a few years of patience and perform well for the better part of a decade.

Bright, pale, green-tinged color. Primary, classic aromas of lemon, lime and menthol, with suggestions of ginger and white flowers. Dense, tactile and concentrated, with a strong mineral element and a resounding spice character. Finishes long and adamantly dry, with a mineral firmness. Very different in style from the comparatively easy-drinking 2009.

The most sublime and the most celebrated estate of Chablis, the wines of Domaine Raveneau are a rare find—exceptional because the vineyard holdings are almost entirely made of grand cru and premier cru fruit, painfully finite as so few are produced, outstanding because of their tremendous quality and consistency, and unusual given the modesty of the vignerons who create these world-class wines.
