2004 Tabarrini Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Grimaldesco (Umbria): "Montelfaclo Sagrantino is the great red wine of Umbria and has been described 'Aromatically as powerful as a great Barolo of With some of the richness of an Amarone And the finish of the best brunello'. Umbrian reds can be overlooked due to the popularity of neighboring Tuscany and especially so when production is tiny as it is here (only 250 acres of Sagrantino are currently planted). That's a shame because the best Sagrantinos can surpass the quality and longevity of Tuscany's wine king Brunello di Montalcino. The Sagrantino grape is known for it's dark colored juice, distinct berry flavors, full body and pure power. The best Sagrantino originate in vineyards near the town of Montefalco. While quite powerful the 2004 drinks beautifully but requires hearty fare." 94 points, Steve Rayman B-21

Deep inky ruby. Plum, black cherry, dried flowers and marjoram on the nose. Then spicy and bright if a bit lean and minty in the mouth. Finishes with a hint of pepperiness and firm tannins, the youthful toughness of which warrant at least a few more years of cellaring. 90 points, Ian D'Agata for Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 09
